This book really helps get into the nitty-gritty of any character. It uses simple texts and it is easy to find the exact kind of character you want to create. I discovered some character traits I hadn't even thought of before reading this book. Great tool, it will always be next to my dictionary on my desk.

A great resource, unfortunately misunderstood by some

I almost passed on this book due to some of the negative reviews here, but I'm glad I didn't. I spotted this on the shelf at a local book store and sat down with it for ten minutes. After that I bought it without hesitation. I'm only knocking one star off because it could be better organized (mostly inconsistencies in presentation, though it's easy to read, it would just be easier to scan through with a little reworking).

I think most of the negative reviewers were either expecting a book about creating characters (similar to Orson Scott Card's wonderful Characters and Viewpoints, for example), or were expecting an in depth discussion of psychological issues. This book is neither of those. I'd almost call it an overview of armchair psychology, in that is briefly discusses the behaviors most commonly associated with various disorders and life circumstances, but doesn't get into the subtleties or the exceptions. For example, the traits listed for first born children don't really fit me, but they do apply to most other first born children I've known. On the other hand, one of the personality types fits me perfectly (The Creative), and people I've known with various disorders are certainly present in the descriptions given, even if it doesn't all apply.

All of this is merely a starting point, a list of the most common traits associated with these topics. Nothing is set in stone, there are no "rules" for how to apply this information. Personally, I found this to be very helpful. For example, I was having some trouble defining an important character in a story I'm working on. At first, he was basically a collection of traits designed to serve the plot. That's fine, except that he was so important I needed him to breath, but was having trouble nailing down interesting but believable behaviors for him. After going through the personality types, it was obvious that he was a Manipulator type. Not 100%, but then no one is. The brief description and list of internal traits and interpersonal behaviors got me thinking in new directions about how he sees himself and how he acts towards others. I didn't take the traits listed and make him exactly that, because then he would be simply a stereotype, rather I took what was there as a starting point, threw half of it away, and meshed what was left with what I already had. Voila, I now have a more interesting character who rings true, and drives the story forward without being simply a plot device.

If you're looking for a brief overview of typical human behavior, this is a great resource. If you want more depth, this will still give you a solid starting point. Just expect to do the real work yourself, and to take your characters beyond that starting point if you want to make them "real".

I’ll be honest, when I started reading The Recruiting Snitch I didn’t think there was much I could get out of the book. I wasn’t looking for a job. I had been pretty successful in the past at landing pretty good jobs, and was pretty sure that if, or when I needed to do it again I could probably land the job I wanted, where I wanted. After reading Alysse’s book I know I will.

I am here to tell you that you think you are doing things that make you sound, and look good to employers, and recruiters, and you might very well be, but after you read this book you are going to realize you are doing something wrong. At the very least you are going to read a paragraph in this book that makes you stop and say “I could be doing this better.”

With a perspective that few will ever be honest enough to share, Alysse blows the same door off that certain websites, and services claim to make as clear as glass. Save yourself a lot of time, money, and research hunting around for tips and stories on the internet, and just read these 116 pages. You wont be sorry.

The bottom line is we all have room to improve, and Alysse covers the bases from start to finish in such a complete, and thorough manner that regardless of your experience, or success in the past it is nearly impossible not to walk away with a few gems that will set you apart from the crowd.

This book is worth its weight in gold

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average term of employment is less than five years. That means that regardless of who you are, there's a strong chance you will be looking for work in the near future. And when that time comes, you'll find Alysse Metzler's "The Recruiting Snitch" worth its weight in gold. This 111-page book is packed full of practical advice, giving you an insight into the mindset of job recruiters and helping you avoid the pitfalls that can keep you from landing your dream job.

The book begins in Chapter 1 with an overview of the different types of recruiters, what they do, and how they impact your ability to land a job. Simply put, it is the recruiter's job to find talent. So knowing how to grab the recruiter's attention becomes extremely important - and that is what the rest of the book is about.

Rather than basing the book entirely on her own experience, Alysse polled over 100 recruiters across the United States on a variety of job related topics. Their responses routinely supplement her own sage advice.

Chapter 2 addresses the importance of setting proper career goals and the need to be passionate about your job. (Trust me, it's extremely important.)

Chapter 3 addresses the gaps in your employment history. Simply put, if you've got them, it's bad. But Alysse offers practical advice on how to minimize their potentially negative impact.

Chapter 4 is where the curtain really gets pulled back. Alysee shares the "labels" that recruiters assign to each applicant and how those labels impact your success in getting hired. There are several negative labels and only a few positive ones. In reading the descriptions, I had to admit that over the years, I've worn several of the bad labels. But fortunately I now know exactly how to avoid them.

Chapter 5 describes the science and secrets behind a company's job postings.

Chapter 6 addresses the treacherous waters of social media and how to best use it to your advantage.

Chapter 7 goes into great length on how to craft a resume that will grab a recruiters attention.

Chapter 8 goes into the work required to actually land a job. Yes, it takes work to get work and Alysse shows you how to do so effectively.

Chapters 9 and 10 discuss the do's and don'ts of interviewing, including the key questions you're likely to be asked and the answers the interviewer will be looking for. In Alysse's own words, "This is something companies do not want you to figure out. I am literally telling you the questions they are going to ask you. I feel like I'm giving you the answers to a test." Chapters 9 and 10 are worth the price of the book alone.

Chapter 11 gives you insight into the mind of the hiring manager.

Chapter 12 discusses how to properly negotiate a job offer.

Chapter 13 provides real-world advice on what your job prospects will be based on your age, experience and education.

Chapter 14 closes the book with dozens of tips and tricks from Alysse's network of world-class recruiters.

Clocking in at 111 pages, "The Recruiting Snitch" is a fast read. You can get through it in an afternoon. And that's a good thing, because you're likely to come back to it over and over again as you refine your job hunting skills.

Alysse's writing style is casual and conversational. That said, it is also pointed and direct. Alysse does not sugar coat things. If something needs to be said, she comes right out and says it. But the good news is that she always remains positive and has advice on how to navigate the pitfalls that we all so easily make.

This book shows you what goes on behind the curtains of recruiters. When you know what a recruiter is thinking you are able to create your own plan on how to handle these situations. With chapters focusing on events that we will all face in life such as phone interviews, or situations that will be brought up such as Social Media. Ms. Metzler does all of us a favor, by giving us this valuable information. I can guarantee this book will do great things for those who read it. I am currently using the techniques in it and getting positive results. This is a must read by ALL college students, and any job-seeking human being. Promises more than it delivers!

A Guide To Deduction is an interesting book. Written by Hannah Rogers, the Author of The Art of Deduction and website: http://aguidetodeduction.tumbler.com.

While reading the book, I got the sense the author intended it to be a book written on how to be a detective. Each chapter has a quote from “SH,” which I assumed is Sherlock Holmes. The book is essentially a collection of deductive rules of thumb taken from her tumbler blog. These short deductive rules cover such areas as spotting things about a person at work, writing, sports, travel, home, lying and health. The author does not include any proof to back up her assertions regarding the deductions she lists. The book also has many typos and words missing in the middle of sentences. It has a simple index but provides no additional sources for further research and training.

Other books on how to deduce people, such as The Monographs, How To Instantly Size-Up Strangers Like Sherlock Holmes and The Deduction Guide are better suited for deducing people because they show you how to actually do it. Mastermind: How To Think Like Sherlock Holmes shows you how Sherlock thinks but not how to think like him and make the deductions he makes.

Another major gripe I have with A Guide To Deduction is the manipulation of the Amazon ratings. It seems that after the book first came out on December 10th, someone named “anonymous” gave it a bad one star review on December 18th. Then suddenly on December 23rd, the book received 10 five star ratings and good reviews (most which were not verified purchases). Also, on the UK amazon website, author Ben Cardall also gave the book a glowing 5 star review, which seemed suspicious to me being that both A Guide To Deduction and The Monographs are published by MX Publishing. I believe most of the reviews for this book are designed to pump up the ratings and increase the book sales.

I liked the book but it is not as amazing as some of the other reviews would have you believe. In my opinion, it promises more than it delivers.

Guide to Deduction

The first thing I noticed was this book could have used a good editor. Words are missing here and there and sometimes it is difficult to understand what the author is trying to say. Some facts are given that seem questionable. A remark is made that smallpox vaccinations were common in anyone born before 1977. But I know someone who was born in 1970 and never got such a vaccination which would have happened if it had been required. While a lot of the contents were interesting there was little fleshing out of the facts to back them up. I did enjoy reading it. It is another of the many books a diligent Sherlockian should own. I just wish the author had put more effort into it.

Nanda fall short in his reponse

This book is one of the Gandhi publications that came out as an answer to Richard Grenier's controversial article The Gandhi Nobody Knows which was published in a Jewish journal around the time Richard Attenborough's movie on Gandhi was released in 1982. Though not powerfully and directly, Nanda in his book was able to leverage his expertise on Gandhi to lay facts from history in an attempt to challenge some of the accusations Richard Grenier leveled against Gandhi. But, his response to such a controversial article was below the expectation especially since it came from an author of one of the most authoritative biographies of Gandhi.

Seemed to be aimed at all the critics of Gandhi, Nanda's this short book is not very well challenging Richard on some of the seemingly contradicting stances and statements of Gandhi that were pointed out in the article. Some of the most pertinent accusations leveled against Gandhi by his critics are his obsessive adherence to Hinduism and its implications on the national cause, his mixing of religion and politics, his exhibitionism, his contradictions, and his excessive appeasement to Muslims but not to the untouchables. Nanda was not providing adequate explanations to any of these but instead just providing facts from the history and letting readers decide the verdict on Gandhi. While it is true that a devoted Gandhi scholar could possibly not agree with his critics on many areas, a casual reader could easily find himself lost in critics' pretentious accusations and out of context references that support them. Nanda unfortunately failed in that attempt; whether he ever had an intention of writing this book as a reply to Richard's article is not known.

It is easy to criticize Gandhi, so is to answer his critics. Both these are possible because of the contradictions and the conspicuity of his life. But the attitude the intellectual circle has towards such criticisms as one that produced by Richard which has besmirched to the level of a smear campaign directed antagonistically at Gandhi for some unknown reason is that such micro level analysis of Gandhi is not necessitated for emphasizing the usefulness of his teachings and validating his contributions to India's freedom struggle. As Stanley Jones rightly said in his book, Mahatma Gandhi ; an interpretation, while one look at Gandhi through a microscope, one also has to look at him through a telescope to get the total man. Gandhi's critics have always missed this point. The more a person is revered, the higher the intention to defile such a person; a perfect example is a recent book by G. B. Singh Gandhi: Behind the Mask of Divinity in which the author has gone to the extent of even calling Gandhi a racist. What these critics reveal is not much of Gandhi himself but lot of them themselves.

Richard's article was considered inferior by many but his article along with the movie produced a next wave of studies on Gandhi and on the relevance of his teachings on this ever deteriorating world. A lukewarm reply from the historians to Richard's article and hundreds of publications since then produced all over the world on Gandhi's life and his teachings shows that scholars have almost shunned Gandhi's critics.

Gandhi is the least understood of all leaders of twentieth century and that is precisely why he still remains as an enigmatic figure and source of a great deal of research. Even after fifty years since his death, Gandhi remains as a source of inspiration for people to delve into his writings and find new meanings and interpretations of his teachings. It seems highly likely, a hundred years from today, that people still be looking into Gandhi with awe and will carry on the research in the hope to find answers to many universal problems of mankind. And, it is highly likely too that there will be more and more critiques on his life and his teachings in the years ahead.

A novice reader of Gandhi is advised to read the biography of Gandhi by the same author first before reading this book.
