Unique, Refreshing approach!
By Official NetNanuNanu
There is a voice in this book, and you can just HEAR this guy as he admonishes writers and drills into their heads the step-by step guide to reporting and writing. The tone is firm with a direct approach to feature writing as the author is adamant that, "reporting and writing can NOT be divorced."

I like the sharp conversational tone; it's like sitting in the classroom. He is very clever with the similes and metaphors to clearly drive his point.

Although this book has made the rounds for years, Blundell offers refreshing ideas and unique insight to writing. He speaks of experience as a Wall Street Journal writer. This is HIS voice, and not a slew of other professional writers churning out a how to book.

I like a quote of his when he tells us that the READER requires specific information and our first priority is to meet that requirement and also that the reader has a deeper and more universal need that has to be met or, he flees. The author said, "nothing is easier than to stop reading."

You won't find the usual writing book addressing topics like these. A sample chapter is Raw Materials - generating ideas; Extrapolation (beyond the event lies a broader, more significant story); Synthesis (assembling promising story ideas from what looks like a junkpile of spare parts); Localization (thinking big); Projection (declining to follow the media sheep to a pasture already overgrazed) and Viewpoint Switching (thinking of a story as a piece of terrain with varying topography).

Also topics titled Shaping Ideas; Story Dimensions, Planning and Execution, Organization, and you get great insight into Handling Key Story Elements that delves into the dreaded leads and endings.

What is interesting in a unique approach to his section titled Wordcraft. He assumes that you the reader already know grammar, syntax and usage. So his goal is to show us how to achieve certain effects at certain places in the story.

You will read some full texts on sample stories that are sprinkled throughout the chapters. Blundell also provides reading material for the writer. He says, "whole forests have died to fill the marketplace with other writing books." One suggestion is Zissner's "On Writing Well."

This is a unique writing book and is meant to read completely. ....Rizzo

Pretty much exactly what the title indicates ....

High quality "how to" on reporting and feature writing. An excellent gift for the budding (or struggling) journalist. Somewhat less useful for non-journalists seeking to blog or to write op-ed pieces.

A storyteller's Bible---surely the best such book available
By A Customer
Contains a lifetime's worth of information---and inspiration. I've read it twice, and dip into it periodically because it contains so much truth. I was a journalist for ten years, and have read a fair number of how-to-write books, but nothing I've seen is in the same league with Blundell's work. He provides a comprehensive system for organizing material and for sharpening and vivifying a story to a professional level. While it may be true that beyond a certain point good writing cannot be taught, there are definitely techniques to master and mistakes to avoid. Apply Blundell's principles and your writing will almost have to improve.

Judges and the Cities: Interpreting Local Autonomy, by Gordon L. Clark

In this remarkable inquiry into the bases of social theory, Gordon L. Clark argues that the heterogeneous nature of our society, with its pluralism of values, causes the rules of social conduct to be constantly made and remade. Examining the role of thecourts in structuring and achieving social discourse, he contends that legal doctrine is no different from other social theories: judicial interpretations are constructed out of specific circumstances and conflicting values, not deduced from neutral and logical principles. There is, he asserts, no final arbiter somehow unaffected by our controversies and schisms.

As concrete examples, Clark analyzes four court disputes in depth, showing that the concept of local autonomy has very different meanings and implications in each of them. These cases—Boston's defense of resident-preference hiring policies, conflict over urban land-use zoning in Toronto, a Chicago's suburb's fight against a sewage treatment plant, and the evolution of the City of Denver's power since 1900—demonstrate that legal reasoning is not impervious to other kinds of reasoning, and the solutions provided by the courts are not unique. To ground his explorations, Clark investigates both liberalism and structuralism, showing that both are inadequate bases for determining social policy. He mounts provocative critiques of the works of de Tocqueville, Nozick, Tiebout, and Posner on the one hand and Castells and Poulantzas on the other.

This ambitious and important work will command the interest of geographers, political scientists, economists, sociologists, and legal scholars.

"Highly recommended as one of the very few books on the subject worthy of being used an an authoritative guide." — Design
"Illustrators, sculptors, and taxidermists who draw or model animals will welcome this new revised edition." — Natural History
Here are 288 remarkably lifelike drawings of animals, furnishing artists and students with an easy-to-follow method of instruction in the drawing of horses, dogs, lions, cows and bulls, stags, and goats. So detailed and so accurate are these drawings that this book has long been a classic work of its kind.
The animals are shown in three ways: external full views and dozens of details (paws, head, eyes, legs, etc.); beneath-the-skin drawings of musculature and of the positions and insertions of each muscle; and skeleton drawings of the bone structures that support and determine surface contours and configurations. In addition, special cross-sections dissect those portions of the animal — such as the head and limbs — that are most important to the artist.
For this edition, Lewis S. Born of the American Museum of Natural History collected 25 plates from George Stubbs's Anatomy of the Horse, long unavailable; Straus-Durckheim's Anatomie Descriptive et Comparative du Chat; and Cuvier and Laurrillard's Anatomie Compare. These plates, as fully annotated as the plates that make up the original book, supplement Ellenberger, Baum and Dittrich with anatomical drawings of the monkey, the bat, the flying squirrel, the rat kangaroo, the seal, and the hare. Mr. Lewis also provided a new preface and added to the annotated bibliography, which now contains 66 items.

Incredible, invaluable!
By Tobe
I wanted a book that specifically focused on horses. Anyone
whose drawn horses, even for years, knows that getting this
animal down pat is no easy feat. Studying anatomy is a must.
This is THE book.
I have so much respect for the person who drew these plates.
It's astounding work. The anatomy is shown from every angle;
starting with skeletal plates, adding muscles and so forth,
these plates "build" the horse from the inside out. After
studying the legs I cut myself some slack! This is a very
beautiful, complex animal. No wonder this is such a challenging
subject!
There are smaller additional sections on a few animals as a
bonus. I found the cat skull study to be immensely helpful.
I don't recommend this book for anyone who wants a how-to
on every animal in the world, this isn't for you. Nor is it for
beginning artists. It is for serious artists who want to do
in depth study of horses because we can't all just walk outside
and see horses everywhere. There's nothing like the real thing,
but this is a good second choice when the real thing isn't
available for study.
This is one of those books that I actually revere and am very
proud to have in my reference library. A serious resource for
serious art study.

Detailed and accurate
By Michelle Staples
This book has been an enormous help with both drawing and sculpting. My only complaint is the narrow range of species. The book is heavy on horses, dogs, lions and cows. I'd like to see more variety - giraffes, perhaps?

A Narrow Scope, But The Highest Level Available
By Marshall Vandruff
Here's my review after teaching Animal Anatomy for Artists in universities for fourteen years, as well as to concept artists, animators and modelers in game corporations.

These are the most authoritative and beautifully rendered plates available.

But let me list the limitations and irritations:

1) The terms are on separate pages from the plates. It's maddening to go back and forth between pages to find the names!
2) The book will not teach you how to draw. You must learn that from Hultgren and the Cortina Famous Artists' Library and Joe Weatherly & Glenn Vilppu... and if you'll allow the plug: me.
3) The names of bones and muscles are not consistent with modern terms.
4) It's mainly Horse, Lion & Dog, and a few others, some of which are drawn by artists inferior to Ellenberger.

So don't go to this book for variety. Go to it for comprehensive anatomy. It will save you years of dissections.

And - it's the most sensitive pencil rendering I've ever seen. Ellenberger is more subtle in modulating surface changes than Escher or Ingres or anyone. I've looked at these plates for countless hours with critical eyes and I always end up admiring them more.

It belongs in every animal artist's library, along with Eliot Goldfinger's book which balances out the shortcomings of Ellenberger. Both books are for the ambitious artist, who will find them worth a hundred times what they cost.

- Marshall Vandruff

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8?More than anything else, 13- year-old Spinner Shatter wants to catch a fish?then she will never have to fish again. Ever. Born into a highly competitive family of fishermen, she would rather be at home in New York City practicing her dance steps than at the family cabin in Jackson Hole, WY. But it is obvious that her father would rather raise a fisher than a dancer. Even his nickname for her, "Spinner," refers to a type of lure. As the story opens, Spinner, in an effort to please her father, is fishing the icy Snake River with little hope of catching anything, let alone winning back the family fishing medal. Her surprise at catching a record-breaking cutthroat trout is nothing compared to the suspenseful adventure that follows as she sets out with her cousin "Alligator" to determine how the rare, large fish came to live in a pool where, by all appearances, it never should have been. Nature's delicate balance is carefully woven into a thoroughly engrossing mystery-adventure. Both Spinner and readers are slowly drawn deeper and deeper into the unfamiliar beauty and power of the natural world. Like the tiny midges that grow up underwater, Spinner emerges with wings and with the understanding that she can be both a fisher and a dancer.?Lisa Wu Stowe, Great Neck Library, NY

Something fishy's going on around here
By Isabel Harding
Originally titled HOOK A FISH, CATCH A MOUNTAIN, this is another Eco-Mystery from children's greatest nature writer, Jean Craighead George, author of JULIE OF THE WOLVES and MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. However, this book never quite gets to level of those classics. The story concerns Spinner, a teenager who is taken on a fishing trip against her will. After she catches a huge, nearly extinct cutthroat troat, she ends up going on a wild adventure through the woods to solve the mystery. I never could get really into the book, as Spinner is not a very likeable character for most of the story and some of it is hard to understand. But great descriptions--like an exciting lightning storm on the side of a cliff to a dangerous grizzly bear attack--come to the rescue. Any young ecologist or naturalist will want to read this story. Don't forget the other Eco-Mysteries--WHO REALLY KILLED COCK ROBIN?, about a boy who must solve the mystery of the death of his town's feathered mascot; THE MISSING 'GATOR OF GUMBO LIMBO, which concerns a girl who must track down a majestic alligator in the Florida Everglades; and THE FIRE-BUG CONNECTION. Also, Ms. George's other eighty or so novels should be more rewarding than THE CASE OF THE MISSING CUTTHROATS.

Gifted Third Grade
By She who loves ukes
I teach a third grade classroom and wanted to introduce mysteries to my students. I chose this book thinking it would provide an appropriate challenge for my top readers. They staged a protest after making a list of tough vocabulary. "Crepuscular" pushed them over the edge. Out of 7 very good readers, 3 wanted to keep with the story. I recommend this title to teachers above the third grade level or for gifted students. One thing that I truly liked about this story, is the 13 year old, female, main character. She is a wonderful role model for other 13 year old girls.

This Is A Great Book!!!!!!!!
By A Customer
When Spinner and her dad go fishing for the weekend her dad promises her if she caught a whopper he would throw it back, but when she catches the family prize cutthroat trout her father keeps him. These kinds of fish are very rare in that part of the river so Spinner and her brave cousin Al set off to solve "The Case of the Missing Cutthroats"!

Great Miscarriage Of Justice
By Ellen
I read this book a few years ago and found it fascinating. Although it is a long book I found it to be easy to read and fairly well written.A young baby goes missing, carried off into the night by a dingo, never to be seen again. The parents are charged with her murder but the evidence is at best, absurd and the attitude of Australia at this time is outrageous! This book is a first hand version of what happened as it is written by the mother accused of killing her baby. She tells this story with sadness at the cicumstances her family found themselves in. The police and research work for this case was a total shambles and Lindy Chamberlain and family suffered greatly because of this.Even as you read this book you know yourself that something is wrong with the way things seem to be going.Lies, rumours, pettiness and hatred are directed at this family but no motive or reason is given why this woman should feel the need to kill her child. A sad tale of a family whose lives are ruined by the verdict decided long before the case was ever brought to trial.

No problem with the book, just that it is very thick and heavy...
By Mary Gilligan
The only problem was...it said it was a paperback book, and it wasn't..it was a old unreturned library book, its huge! not that I have a problem with big books, it did say "paperback" and it was a hard back book, a little big to be carrying around....

Aging cowboy and bronco-buster Wes Hendricks just wants to be left alone on his poor ranch, even when town developers offer him big money to sell it. Wes's grandson reluctantly tries to convince him to give up his home, but that was before he, too, succumbs to the ranch's--and a young cowgirl's--wild beauty.

From Library Journal
This warmly human story about a generation gap that closes is set in west Texas of the 1980s where the old and new ways are in serious conflict. Wes Hendricks is an old-time rancher who loves his land and animals and refuses to sell out to make way for progress in the shape of an artificial lake that will flood his home. His grandson, Jim Ed, sent to convince him to sell, gradually becomes a supporter of his grandfather. The old ways of Wes and the new ways of Jim Ed and Glory Be (neighbor and romantic element) are joined and all ends well. Very pleasant reading by a much-praised Texas author. One of my favorites
By George Aubrey
I have a hard time choosing between this book or The Time It Never Rained as my all-time Kelton favorite. This book speaks to the heart of this ol' Texas country boy. The reader will be drawn into the story and feel the raw emotions of the protagonists and even the secondary characters. It is a story of discovery, of new appreciation for things we never thought about, of older values versus newers ways. If you haven't read this book, then you havent read a Western. Don't expect Indian raids, as it is set in more modern days. But there is plenty to sink your teeth into with this Superlative book!

Elmer Keltons Best.
By D. Edwards
I fave read almost all of Elmer Keltons mmpb books and consider this the best. As the introduction states it's a tale of a old cowboy and hard scrable ranch owner wanting to live out his years on his place. The town wants to buy it to make a lake out of it so everyone is pressureing him to sell. They even enlist his city boy grandson. The tale continuses with the grandson understanding his grandfathers love for the old ranch more and more with the help of a fiesty girl
who dislikes him a soon as she sees him. I will not tell anymore so as not to spoil it for anyone who wants to read it. One of the best and should tug at your heart strings. Don't worry, old and new love wins out in the long run, but what a ride.
