About the Author
Since 1994 Michael Blaha has been a consultant and trainer in conceiving, architecting, modeling, designing, and tuning databases. He has worked with dozens of organizations around the world. Blaha has authored seven U.S. patents, six books, and numerous articles. He received his doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis and is an alumnus of GE Global Research in Schenectady, New York. He has worked in many problem domains and specializes in financial applications.

UML and IE: Perfect Together

I am an experienced data architect who has used entity-relationship modeling, specifically Information Engineering (IE) notation, to design databases. I have also used the UML in the past to design software systems. What I had not done before was use the UML to design databases. This book was perfect for me, as it showed how to use UML and IE in combination for database design.
Mike Blaha's writing is more terse than verbose, but I found this very efficient as each statement in the book was precise and communicated a relevant thought very clearly.
I would recommend the book to anyone who is new to the idea of data modeling and/or to someone like me who is up to speed with data modeling but has never used the UML for that purpose.

Teaches Data Modelers the importance of UML

Michael Blaha first introduced the concept of this book to the Chicago Data Management Association members who gave it a thumbs-up and also gave some helpful advice about explaining UML in terms of conventional database notation. From there Michael developed the idea to include exercises so that the reader could test himself on his understanding of this new notation. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in gaining knowledge about, or using, UML. I would also recommend the book to educators since students have readily available exercises to validate what they have learned after reading each chapter.
