this has become one of my bibles!

So simple, yet so true, this is an excellent book! It's had such a strong impact on me that when I researched Dr Batmanghelidj, with the view to contact him, I almost cried to learn that he has died. The majority of the population have no idea that they are dehydrated, even when you explain the logic of it. It's not until you hydrate yourself that you truly begin to understand the signs and symptoms of dehydration. Yes, you pee a lot!! The rock salt helps settle this, and your body does adjust. I love this book so much I have 2 copies, one I keep for myself, the other gets shared around. Sadly, most people I have leant this to have read it, understood it, but still refuse to accept that they are dehydrated, and refuse to change their ways. Oh well, that's their problem.

Very good, very helpful book. Salt is not the enemy, common table salt is. The right salt can balance your body. Read this book and learn about it.

A key to health. Not just water. Salt is critical.

Critically important element to dehydration studies It isn't just water the body needs in order to re-hydrate, it is salt as well. Dr. Batman gives the facts, gives the things to watch for the things to do depending on one's circumstances. Adding judicious amounts of salt to my water intake has prevented my body from simply excreting the water I drink right back out--equivalent to no or minor health benefit. Highly recommended.

A great introduction to a fascinating subject

"Environmental Ethics" by Joseph Des Jardins is a balanced and relatively complete introduction to an issue that is bound to be widely discussed in the decades ahead. After two introductory chapters in which he discusses among other matters various approaches to moral decision making (such as utilitarian and deontological ethics), subsequent chapters include issues such as managing public lands, sustainability and responsibility to the future, anthropocentric and biocentric ethics and the inherent value of life, the land ethics, deep ecology, ecofeminism, and environmental justice and social equality.

Des Jardins writes in a lively and clear fashion and does a good job of steering a middle course when discussing the many controversial issues that arise in environmental ethics. Even though this is not an anthology, Des Jardins describes in sufficient detail the ideas of various authors across the ideological spectrum (sometimes quoting them extensively) so as to provide an accurate portrayal of their various positions.

The one drawback has nothing to do with the quality of the book. It retails for more than $100. Even the Kindle edition lists at just slightly under that. However, this cost is not out of line with other texts in the field.

Wonderful overview of an important field. Is is required reading for my class in Environmental Ethics. Writing style is excellent. Clear. Concise. Very up to date examples.

This is a collection of 366 short daily devotionals - each describing a martyrdom, prefaced by a scripture and accompanied by a prayer or quotation. When we read the word 'hero' we imagine someone who has performed mighty deeds, but the heroism of most of the people commemorated in this book is of a quieter kind, the heroism of standing firm in the face of an often horrific death. Names, places and dates are indexed and Patrick Sookhdeo has written a thoughtful foreword exploring what martyrdom means and how Christian attitudes to it have changed down the centuries. One story tells of a Korean pastor and his family placed in a hole dug by the communists and offered freedom in return for denouncing the gospel. Instead, the mother told the children that they would be dining with "the King of kings, the Lord of lords" that night and led them in singing a hymn while the hole was slowly filled in. Many of the witnesses became Christians. Modern martyrs

Senait Habta, a 28-year-old university student, was held for two years in a metal shipping container, which was sweltering hot during the day and bitterly cold at night. Senait became seriously ill and was reportedly offered medical care and freedom if she would deny Christ. She refused, and eventually died on 23 April 2010.

She had been arrested with 15 other students simply for attending a Bible study group. Eritrea is one of the world's worst persecutors of Christians. The government sees them as a threat to national unity because they give their ultimate allegiance to God and not to the state.'

Faith still carries a cost

Not all of the martyrs for the Christian faith died in the first century. Even today, in many corners of the world, people are being put to death simply because they are followers of Jesus Christ.

Patrick Sookhdeo's "Heroes of Our Faith: Inspiration and Strength for Daily Living" shares brief, daily reading selections about contemporary martyrs. It's a poignant reminder of this growing toll of Christians who are paying the ultimate cost. The book is not comfortable reading, but for those of us who live in comparative ease and safety in the western world, it's important to be reminded of the persecution some Christians experience every day, and to remember them in our prayers.

I give this book five stars, whether in the Kindle or hard cover edition.

Best Memory Book/ Best Lorayne Book Ever

I've read HL's other memory books before this, perhaps with insufficient motivation or attention. But, this is the very best book on memory training and surpasses his other books. There are several reasons.

You may be put off by memory "tricks" thinking they don't actually improve memory. But HL shows how memory enhanced by his techniques becomes "true" memory after a while. And the techniques are fun to use and well presented. I have had an especially good time using them to memorize foreign vocabulary. Gradually, for each word or phrase, the technique fades as the true memory takes over and you simply remember the words and phrases as a "normal" memory.

His techniques rely a lot on visualization. But don't despair. If, like me, you are "visualization challenged," meaning you don't visualize clearly or think you don't visualize at all -- you are wrong. Ask yourself which side of the car you get in when you drive. See. You have some visualization (or if you never drive, which side of the bus is the door on?). A really great part of this training is that as you practice, your ability to visualize grows and grows. That is a side benefit which is truly remarkable. I really enjoy that effect; it's like a fountain of youth.

In this book HL says a lot about why we have memory problems in the first place. The main reason is that we do not pay attention to what we see and do. Much of his technique is to ensure that we do that first. In fact that may explain why memory seems to become harder as we age. As children we see everything as new and interesting. Past the age of 60 we may see them as less so, and sort of tune out. HL certainly has the antidote for this.

Another reason I love this book is that it is written better and more interestingly than his previous ones. The material is presented in more digestible and useful doses interspersed with interesting mind games. Someone here said that these techniques beat "Lumosity" exercises. I don't know about that, but this book keeps the brain engaged and the neurons firing. Recent research in neuroplasticity suggests that this actually encourages growth in brain cell connections and mental effectiveness. Based on my experience with the exercises and practices set forth in this book I don't doubt it at all.

I especially liked HL's statements about why these techniques work and the focus on their practical use.

If you want to improve your memory, and mental effectiveness in general, REMEMBER to buy this book.

Great collection of techniques

Harry Lorayne has been doing this business for a few decades now, and it shows somewhat. If you have any of his other writings, the subject of the book might be slightly familiar. His techniques haven't really changed at all, but he has gotten older and as such seems to be targeting senior citizens in this book. Along with his techniques, Lorayne includes some brain teasers and a brief history of trained memories, which I happen to have some familiarity with. I read The Art of Memory by Frances Yates so I do know about some of the old tomes and how it was treated back in the Renaissance and so on. All in all, if your memory is starting to go, you don't really have anything more to lose.

Forget Lumosity This is better

I was looking for something to help in memorization and observation. I practiced these but I had no sure way of remembering. After reading this book, my memory has soared to new heights. I remember names, quotes, biblical passages, and what I read even after week.

Harry Lorayne does a great job keeping the book entertaining and fun. There's even a bonus, upon completion of the book, you'll know all 50 states and capitals of America, 25 of the amendments, many quotes from famous people of the past and present, and how to remember where you put your keys.

I recommend this book to everybody of all ages.

Nuggets Amidst the Jargon

The nineteen essays collected here (along with introduction and afterword) grapple with various aspects of cinematic "remakes", and while most have something to offer the general reader, many get bogged down in attempting to find a definition or critical space for remakes. In other words, to get to the good stuff, you're going to have to wade through a lot of critical jargon from psychoanalytic film theory and cultural studies�words such as "intertextuality," "oedipal" and "postmodernity" pop up a lot. That caveat aside, there are plenty of nuggets to reward the patient reader.
Albert Kolker's "Recalculating the Hitchcock Formula" is an intriguing analysis of Martin Scorcese's Cape Fear, in which it is proposed that Scorcese remade Cape Fear by simultaneously remaking Hitchcock's Stage Fright, I Confess, and Stranger on a Train. Dan Georgakas's essay on Robin Hood effectively shows how the 1938 and 1991 versions each embodied the cultural and political trends of their time. Michael Brashinsky's considers Bergman's Virgin Spring and Wes Craven's The Last House of the Left in an examination of how a to remake a European "art" film into a low-budget slasher picture. In "The Superhero With A Thousand Faces," Luca Somigli provides a cogent analyses of the relationship of superhero film franchises such as Batman and Superman to their comic-book sources. His elegant conclusion is that such projects are based on the accumulated myth of the characters and setting, rather than being remakes. My favorite essay is Elisabeth Weis's exploration on how the film M*A*S*H was adapted for television and managed to continually reinvent itself while maintaining audience loyalty. Other essays have their moments, but the ones above will be the most accessible and interesting to the general reader.

About the Author

Shaoying Liu holds a B.Sc and a M.Sc degree in Computer Science from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, and a Ph.D in Formal Methods from the University of Manchester, U.K. He worked as an Assistant Lecturer and then Lecturer at Xi'an Jiaotong University, a Research Associate at the University of York, and a Research Assistant at the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College of the University of London, respectively, in the period of 1982 -- 1994. He joined the Department of Computer Science at Hiroshima City University as an Associate Professor in April 1994, and then became a faculty member of the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences at Hosei University in April 2000. In April 2001 he was promoted to a full Professor . He was invited as a Visiting Research Fellow by The Queen's University of Belfast from December 1994 to February 1995, and a Visiting Professor to Oxford University from December 1998 to February 1999. He is a member of IEEE Computer Society.

Sendler's own life history is dramatic and inspiring; she was brutally tortured by the Nazis in the infamous Pawiak prison, and her extraordinary good work during the war was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for 60 years. Narrator Patrick Lawlor does an excellent job conveying the suspense and tension in Sendler's life. Lawlor's voice lends the right emotion and inflection to each character. About the Author
Jack Mayer is a pediatrician and a writer.� He began practicing pediatrics in 1976 in Enosburg Falls, Vermont, a small town in eastern Franklin County on the Canadian border. His was the first pediatric practice in that half of the county. He was a country doctor there for ten years, often bartering medical care for eggs, firewood, and knitted afghans. From 1987 - 1991 Dr. Mayer was a National Cancer Institute Fellow at Columbia University School of Public Health in New York City, researching the molecular biology of childhood cancer. Most of his scientific writing was done during those four years. He was also an academic pediatrician at Columbia University's Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Mayer returned to Vermont in 1991 and established Rainbow Pediatrics in Middlebury, Vermont where he continues to practice primary care pediatrics. He is an Instructor in Pediatrics at the University of Vermont School of Medicine and an advisor for pre-medical students at Middlebury College.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mayer has written short stories, poems, and essays about his years in pediatric practice and hiking The Long Trail in Vermont. He was a participant at Middlebury College's Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in 2003 and 2005 for fiction, and in 2008 for poetry. LIFE IN A JAR: The Irena Sendler Project is his first non-fiction book.
He lives in Middlebury, Vermont.

A Heartfelt Story of Courage

One person can make a difference. This was, and continues to be, Irena Sendler's message to the world, and Jack Mayer's Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project conveys that message in a heartfelt manner that grabs and engages the reader from beginning to end.

The book is a story of a Holocaust hero, plus one of Kansas students and their teacher. The world had not heard of Irena Sendler until a group of students in Bourbon County started a National History Day project. The book is called a "novel" on the cover, but more closely the book is a "non-fiction" novel. The author went to Kansas on two occasions while writing the book, and he also traveled to Poland with the Kansas teens and their teacher, spending time interviewing Irena Sendler and child survivors. Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is based on the true story of Irena Sendler and the Kansas students who "rescued the rescuer's story for the world."

Jack Mayer's description of the constant fear and peril of Sendler's rescue of 2,500 children from sure death is vivid; the reader feels transported back to the ghetto as the suspense and difficulty of Irena's missions are described. Moreover, while the story of Irena's acts of bravery and heroism of rescuing children from the Warsaw ghetto is captivating, equally so are the acts of bravery the young women discovered within themselves to overcome personal obstacles in their lives while researching tirelessly to find information on Irena. Megan Stewart had to come to terms with her mother's breast cancer; Sabrina Coons had to come to terms with being part of a military family and frequently relocating; and Liz Cambers had to come to terms with her mother's abandonment when Liz was only five years old. Guiding the girls through their National History Day project and struggles was their history teacher Norm Conard, who with his dedication and encouragement, assisted them in eventually finding Irena. The young women's struggles reveal their vulnerabilities and move the reader to sympathize with the teens and cheer for their achievements.

The meeting in Poland that takes place among Irena, the Kansas teens, and their teacher is nothing short of a miraculous act of fate. The emotions are palpable, and the events leading up to their visit keep the reader captivated. Tears flowed from my eyes as I read about the love and admiration that were felt between Irena and each student when they met and between Mr. Conard and Irena herself. The incredible manner in which this true story unfolded underscores the power good still has in this world, as well as the influence people have when they help others.

Jack Mayer's book begins with the Kansas teens trying to develop their mission of "making a difference and repairing the world" through their National History Day project. By the end of the book, it is obvious they not only accomplished that goal but greatly exceeded it. Through their research about Irena and their close relationship with her, they made, and continue to make, a difference to an innumerable amount of people and repaired each other's lives. They most certainly will make a difference for anyone who reads their inspiring story.

A Riveting Book

Knowing the story of Irena Sendler, I looked forward to the publication of this book. I knew I would enjoy reading it but I was unprepared to be absolutely riveted by it. I took the book home planning to read a chapter or two but ended up reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. While I knew Irena's story, I did not know the story of the three Kansas girls and their history project. On so many levels, this is an amazing story - the impact of a teacher on the lives of three young girls, the power of historical research, the incredible work done by Sendler and the human touch across both generations and continents. When the young women finally met the subject of their research, Irena Sendler, all differences were transcended. It did not matter that they had grown up in rural Kansas decades after Sendler did her heroic work in Poland in the late 1930's. Irena Sendler's life, continuing to be so beautifully portrayed in the "Life in a Jar" play, provides inspiration by demonstrating that ordinary people can do great things.

Touching

I have always avoided feeling the pain of the Holocaust until I read Life in a Jar. I let myself cry through many pages, horrified at how human beings can treat other human beings. By the end, I was crying for a different reason--how Irena Sendler and some students and Jack Mayer made a difference, living and telling this story. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel the worst and the best of what we human beings are capable of doing and being. Don't expect to have dry eyes. Thank you, Irena Sendler for saving so many lives and Jack Mayer and students for bringing this story to the world.

There are some great books out there and one should always have a ...

All I can say is this author speaks to me. I am not what most people would think of as the type to get "into" herbal healing (leave it at that). I have been working and healing with herbs for about a year or so and consider it a calling ("hobby" to those who ask). There are some great books out there and one should always have a few on hand to reference. However, similar to Rosemary Gladstar, this author speaks to the inner healer - the person who is magically drawn to plants and their divine healing properties, but may not know why. He inspires a person to want to understand the magic AND the science. If you want a "list" of herbs and their medicinal properties, this isn't it, it is SO much more. I am not into worshiping Gaia or dancing under the moonlight to celebrate life's offerings, but he is and that's just fine with me. It will be fine too with anyone who chooses to include this wonderful book in their herbal reference library.

Didn't like it much

The only thing I'm glad about is that I didn't pay full price for it. The information's certainly there, but the reader often has to plow through too much hippy-dippy nonsense to extract it. I don't really find the format terribly useful and while I appreciate the mythology, I don't really see the need for a chapter-long conversation with a centaur. it made for pleasant reading, but that's not why I bought the book. I bought this book as a reference with the hope that it would give me a solid understanding of what herbs to use for what, in what dosage and so on. I'm sorry--genuinely sorry--to say it, but for me it's a fail. It's not without useful information--please don't get me wrong--but there's not enough and what there is could have been organized in a much more effective manner.

Absolute Delight

I must drop a note expressing my absolute delight with this book. The information, manner and character of writing style has resulted in my devouring of this selection. The content is taught by an authority of Herbalism and very thorough. It has been years since I was unable to put a book down and cannot rave enough about this one or my gratefulness to own and share.
