Apparel Manufacturing: Sewn Product Analysis is designed to provide a conceptual framework of the manufacturing process for future apparel professionals. It helps students understand the complex decision making involved in marketing, merchandising, and producing apparel to meet the needs of the target customer. Our intent, is to provide a global, integrated perspective so that readers will understand the interrelationships among processes and decisions.

The content is divided into five parts that focus on the factors that determine the cost, price, quality, performance, and value of garments.

Part I presents a broad perspective of the organization of the apparel business, the roles of marketing and merchandising, and the complexities of operating in a worldwide market.
Part II provides a comprehensive discussion of apparel development processes including development of product standards and specifications. Specific roles of design and technical design are enhanced with new sections on establishing garment fit and finishing.
Part III focuses on apparel management with emphasis on quality, cost, materials, product development, and production sourcing.
Part IV examines production processes considering engineering, production planning and management, and human resources that underlay preproduction, sewing, equipment, and finishing operations.
Part V focuses on management, issues and decisions related to support materials, closures, and trims.
Appendices enable readers to relate sewn product decisions to three basic apparel products including t-shirts, men's dress slacks, and dress shirts.

About the Author
Grace I. Kunz is Professor Emerita at Iowa State University.

Although our textbook is widely used by professionals in all segments of the industry it is our goal to assist textile and apparel students to better understand garment manufacturing and the complex decision making involved in producing apparel to meet the needs of the target customer. Our intent is to provide a global and integrated perspective that will enable students to have a comprehensive understanding of the industry and to be well prepared apparel professionals.

The textbook incorporates a professional approach, industry language with an academic orientation, and an improved conceptual framework reflective of changes in the global industry. The content is still divided into five parts that focus on the factors that determine the cost, price, quality, performance, and value of garments.

Part I, "Introduction to Apparel Manufacturing," deals with issues associated with the concepts of product performance and quality, the functional organization of apparel manufacturing firms, and the complexities of operating in a world market. There is increased emphasis on global and retail markets. The first chapter is "Organization of the Apparel Business." The new revision contains descriptions of the different types of retailers and trade associations. Part I also includes updated versions of the chapters "Marketing Strategies" and "Merchandising Processes." This includes a market analysis of U.S. jeans wear and positioning strategies for men's dress shirts.

Part II is titled "Product Development." It includes three chapters that deal with factors relating to product analysis, specification development, and the specific roles of design and technical design in the apparel development processes. Chapters 4 and 5 have been reversed from the 3rd edition. New career opportunities in the industry are still in Chapter 4. The Garment Analysis Guide is enhanced to cover garment analysis as well as specification development. There are new sections on establishing garment fit and finishing.

Part III, "Dimensions of Apparel Management" includes four chapters that deal with apparel management in a global environment. The sequence of chapters has been changed to move "Costs, Costing, Pricing, and Profit," ahead of the chapters on sourcing. This will enable students to relate costing concepts to sourcing issues. . "Materials sourcing and Selection" begins with the discussion of the Global Textile Complex. "Product Development and Production Sourcing" now includes an expanded discussion of import costs.

Part IV, "Focus on Production," consists of five chapters related to the production processes. Content from "Apparel Engineering" and "Preproduction Operations although not significantly changed, has been reordered to reduce duplication and to enhance the flow of information.

Part V, "Findings Management," includes three chapters focusing on issues related to support materials, closures, and trims. The content has been updated to reflect new materials and applications that are viable options in developing products for today's specialized markets.

As with previous editions there are three appendices that discuss applications of the garment analysis system. Styling, materials selection, and assembly methods for three basic products are analyzed relative to target markets, price range, and consumer expectations.

Ultra Informative

This was the required textbook for my Apparel Manufacturing class. My teacher ran her own manufacturing company several years ago and told our class that no book she has read even came close to providing the wealth of knowledge available in this book. Seam finishes are explained in terms necessary to complete spec packs, including seam diagrams and stitch numbers used as standards in the industry world-wide. If you plan on putting a technical section in your portfolio or plan to work in the manufacturing side of the industry or plan on being a pattern maker, I recommend this book more than any other. It is rare that I enjoy a textbook so much, but I have read it through and referenced it constantly since the class. Worth every penny.

A Universe of Knowledge and Best Practice

This is what all text books should be like.

I'm presently tasked with overseeing the start up of a garment factory in another country.

I've got plenty of manufacturing experience, but none of it is in apparel. I needed to learn about making clothes - fast.

So I got this book.

Yeah it's expensive, but not when you consider the wealth of practical information packed between its covers.

The authors methodically tackle all aspects of the industry, from the macro to the micro view. At every level there are useful examples, diagrams, charts, and other aids.

Just a few of the topics dealt with in this excellent book include the following:

- Industry organization and globalization;

- Product development processes;

- Managing quality, cost and sourcing functions;

- Detailed focus on all aspects of the production process;

- Garment analysis.

There's over 600 pages of this, but it never gets boring.

All textbooks should be like this.

About the Author

Mark W. Lipsey is the Director of the Center for Evaluation Research and Methodology, and a Senior Research Associate, at the Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies (Ph.D. in Psychology from The Johns Hopkins University in 1972). His professional interests are in the areas of public policy, program evaluation research, social intervention, field research methodology, and research synthesis (meta-analysis).� The topics of his recent research have been risk and intervention for juvenile delinquency and substance use, early childhood education programs, and issues of methodological quality in program evaluation research. Professor Lipsey serves on the editorial boards of Evaluation and Program Planning, Psychological Bulletin, the Journal of Experimental Criminology, and the American Journal of Community Psychology, and boards or committees of, among others, the National Research Council, the Department of Education What Works Clearinghouse, Campbell Collaboration, and Blueprints for Violence Prevention. He is a recipient of the American Evaluation Association’s Paul Lazarsfeld Award, the Society of Prevention Research’s Nan Tobler Award, a Fellow of the American Psychological Society, and co-author of the program evaluation textbook, Evaluation: A Systematic Approach and the meta-analysis primer, Practical Meta-Analysis.

Excellent resource for the beginning meta-analyst

This book outlines the entire process of meta-analysis from start to finish. It is extremely user-friendly and easy to understand; as a graduate student, I was able to teach myself meta-analysis from this book without any additional help. In addition to teaching the basic calculations and statistics involved in meta-analysis, it also does a great job of explaining how to interpret the results from each step. The word "practical" in the title is an accurate descriptor, because the book focuses on telling you what you need to know to a produce a meta-analysis; it does not go into great deal about the mathematical concepts underlying the calculations.

Because the book does not go beyond the fundamentals of meta-analysis (nor does it purport to), it may not be the only meta-analysis book you need depending on the type of data you're working with. There have been some analyses that I've had to find other books to teach me because they were beyond the scope of this book. Personally, I've found this one to be a useful second book to own: The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis.

Easy to Read ... Great Starter Book

Sometimes, you just want a practical introduction to a topic. How do I use the technique? What are the hiccups involved in just using the method? What traps should I look out for? How do I interpret my findings? This book does just that for meta-analysis.

The problem with most intro meta-analysis references is that they are steeped in theory with no examples/practical applications to show you how the theory is applied in everyday life. Still other references are a collection of applications, but provide no guidance on how to interpret the findings. Lipsey's book is a cross between the two. A reasonably intelligent person (with or without a background in meta-analysis) should be able to follow Lipsey's writing without much assistance and appy their findings to their own data. I highly recommend this book. Thanks Mark.

Very good read

If you're looking for a comprehensive political and economic history of the Caribbean, look no further. I bought this book to read before and during a trip to the US Virgin Islands, and it did not disappoint. It's a little dry at times and gets bogged down in stats and figures, but overall, it's worth the effort. Williams finishes it up with a nice thesis summary in the last chapter. FYI, this book only runs through the late 60s, so don't expect to read about anything after that.

Great, Fun Read

This was a great action packed read. We see Bethany Anne grieve over the loss of a close friend and work her way out of her anger by the end of the book. I liked that the ultimate antagonist wasn't portrayed as a black or white evil character and at the very end, I was hoping for their survival.

This book didn't have as much errors as the last two so the flow in reading it was much smoother.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and I'll probably be amongst the first to buy it when it comes out.

Okay Okay Okay Already! I'll Write a Review!

Now you've gone and done it, I'm finally writing a book review. I don't know what it is, maybe a combination of being in the same age group as Mike (our author), apparently watched the same TV shows and movies, read the same authors he's referred to (the Rick Gualtieri reference was great, btw) ... whatever it is, I also really identify with his sense of humor. I've purchased hundreds of products on Amazon and posted a few reviews - I've purchased literally hundreds of Kindle Books and maybe that number is closer to a thousand now, but Unlimited needs an enhancement to tell me how many I've "borrowed" so I can keep better track. Anyway, suffice it to say this is my very first book review. I'm writing this after completing book five and having already decided to continue reading the series I suppose it was time to write this.

You're going to see comments from folks about the grammar, punctuation and other mistakes (which the author completely owns and is making strides to correct, thanks for that). I've dropped lesser stories because the editing drove me nuts - but this story line and moreover, the storytelling were so strong I decided it was okay to just read right on through it. This is such a great combination of an original thought on the supernatural / extraterrestrial angle, great characters, settings, (mostly) believable technology and technobabble, along with a quasi-military setting I just remained hooked and kept going. I'm glad I did!

Yes, I've yelled, "get a damn editor already!" a few times but I'll echo the sentiment of another reviewer and say if our author can pump out a book in a week for my reading enjoyment and it's a fun, entertaining story sans the editing problems then I'm going to say, "Thank You, Thank You Very Much" and get ready to read the next book. No idea how someone can pump out a strong book in a week, no idea at all. I don't know about anyone else but even as much as I enjoy the Iron Druid stories, I've gone months (or years? seems like it) sometimes waiting for the next book and when I dive in I'm somewhat lost as far as the greater story arc is concerned. Sometimes I've literally had to go back and completely reread earlier books just to get myself reoriented with the big picture.

I also appreciate authors willing to go Unlimited (hopefully stay there, too) as it is quite exasperating to get invested in a good story line and when you're five or six books deep suddenly those $2.99 books have turned into $4.99, $7.99, $9.99, $13.99.... seriously? I enjoy a good story but you didn't even have a cut a tree for the Kindle version!

It's been enjoyable watching the stories improve over time. I thought in the first few books there were stretches where I was saying, "okay, you've done enough setting up the story, I'm getting a little tired of the intricate details of (acquiring new people, ships, equipment, setting up training, ironing out your organizational structure), let's get back to the meat of the story and make something happen ... oh, good, we're back to doing something now! And then in later books there is less obsessive setup and more streamlined story with a good ratio of backstory to action and so on,

I also like the balance of descriptive writing. I've read books where so little was written about the scenery I almost felt I was in a vacuum and had no idea what the place looked like vs. the author who went on and on for literally pages about the pattern in the chair, the color of the carpet, the paint on each wall, what the house smelled like, who owned the house previously (okay, you get it). There's enough in Mr. Anderle's books to help me picture the people, the ships, the castle etc. without so much over-description I'm left saying, enough! - you've gone on for four pages, I'm fading out and/or skipping paragraphs at this point.

Love Lost- Book 3

At this time, I've read all 7 books currently available in this series. As a kindle unlimited member, I feel quite relaxed doing that. If I had to pay, well, I'd probably still do so, but maybe not.

This first book is actually quite good. The way it's written drew me in, made me want to know more about the characters, the intrigue, the supernatural world . It certainly interested me enough to get the second book.

From the second book onwards, the writing quality begins to drop. Instead of taking time to pace things, to continue his original writing style, it begins to become quite linear, and people's personalities begin to blur, and there is less and less character development, although I do have to say the plot does continue to progress in each book.

I'd rate Book 3 as 3.75 out of 5 stars. Don't see how huge numbers of reviewers can give it 5 stars. Just not that good.

Normally when I see this in Kindle authors, I see the spiral of death...authors who just churn out book after book for volume, to show they have a series of books under their belt. I often leave them for other books.

But by the third book, another fun and interesting feature becomes obvious- Michael Anderle's own blurb. He gives a breakdown between Kindle unlimited and kindle purchases, and candidly admits he's not trying to produce Shakespearean levels of quality writing. and that he's aiming to complete a new novel in roughly 9-14 days, which he does. At this sort of speed, no normal person can produce deep indepth quality, and, by his own admission, he doesn't! But it's still a fun ride, and as I said, I'm using kindle unlimited so "it's free", so to speak.

What I think happened is this.

The author probably wanted to write about the supernatural for a while, and took the plunge last year. Since it's his first, he took the time to work out the characters, the plot,. how he wanted to start it and the direction he wanted to go. This is why the first book is so much better than the following 6, as after the first, instead of having months, or possibly years, to write one, he's got just 1.5 weeks.

Anyway, bottom line is the first one is quite a good read. It's a unique look at the supernatural, has interesting characters, and is a good introduction into the series. Subsequent ones are more let's see what the author wrote in 10 days, sort of thing. Ok if you have Kindle Unlimited.
