I first read this book in 1968, and was so impressed by what I read that I jumped right into it. Within a few hours, I was feeling brighter, more alert, and more cheerful. Within a few days, I could not keep a smile off my face all day. I have worked on this material with many others, over the past 40+ years, with consistently good results: brighter, more buoyant emotionally, and much, much happier.

The new edition (2007) is also much easier to use, as the spiral binding allows it to stay flat for the section you are working on. There is even room for notes in the workbook.

I also got the hard cover edition for my library, and to lend to friends.

This is a practical self-help workbook that almost anyone can use to quickly improve how they feel about themselves and about life. It can give one a fascinating 30-minute daily mental workout, with fresh material every day. It even includes self-assessment charts where you can plot where you are starting from, and then record your progress over several weeks or even months. You won't need a chart to tell you how much better you feel, but it is interesting to look at before and after and compare.

This book is easy to read, intriguing to consider, fun to do the exercises, and produces very pleasing results. What more could you ask for?

Note: not for the overly timid. As you work through the exercises, you will find that in addition to feeling much better, your memory improves greatly, and that although the book concentrates on pleasant incidents in the exercises, you can occasionally run into a less pleasant incident to say the least. The book includes practical exercises to relieve the intensity of such unhappy times, and to help restore your equilibrium quickly.

Easily one of my favourite books of all time.

This might sound silly, but...

Reading and going through just the first few activities in this book have made me happier and improved my sense of smell. Wonder how much things will improve by the time I finish. Seems to me anybody could get some kind of benefit from this book without having to become a Scientologist, per se. It's easy to follow, steps are explained well, maybe even with a bit too much detail. If you do decide to get it, I suggest you make sure the discs are included.

Amazing Tool, It Works. Relieves old psychological wounds, traumatic memories, when nothing else will...

This is the best self help book i've ever read in my life. I'm not a scientologist, but I believe in, and will participate in something that works. This book WORKS, to relive deep hurts, old wounds, baggage, from the subconscious, where it's not doing you any good and where you can't get to it consciously, not even in therapy, because it's subconscious. You have to find methods that get to the subconscious in order to address the pain there. This is a great method, puts you in control of it, to do at your own pace, and it really works. Just read the instructions and start doing the excersies. After doing the exercises for a few minutes, to purge traumatic memories, I would find I no longer had so much heaviness in my being. After several more exercise sessions, (I could only do them for a few minutes at a time pesonally, because the past trauma i was healing was too much to take for longer than that) , I found I could now recall the event with NO painful or sad or angry or any heavy emotions. Instead I am able to now see the trauma without painful emotion, and see it for what it REALLY is, and therefore understand it, the whole situation much better. Once I understood it for what it really was, i let go of it, was at peace with it, and it never taxed me painfully again. I searched for years for relief from traumatic memories and there simply is nothing in traditional therapy. This is fantastic. Get one and give it to a traumatized veteran, rape victim, anyone with PTSD of any kind, if you know one. It actually works.

The actual code explained. I loved it.

This volume presents a "C" code implementation of TCP/IP, along with detailed explanations of what the code accomplishes. I was able to get a working knowledge of how the protocol operates by reading the actual code and the accompanying explanations. As a systems engineer seeking a working knowledge of how TCP/IP operates, this book was exactly appropriate for me. I would highly recommend it to software engineers as well.

Great Explanation of Concepts and Detail

Comer's book does an excellent job of mixing details and concepts. While Steven's book is perfect if you have to work directly with the code in the BSD network stack, it is full of cruft from other protocols and complexity due to years of code maintenance. The BSD code takes short cuts for major and minor speed improvements at the cost of clarity and understanding.

Comer, on the other hand, designs his systems to be understood. It is possible to understand the entire Xinu system from the high level down to the smallest details. Very few people can make the same claim about the BSD kernel. The layout of the book is excellent, describing the design trade-offs in writing the networking code. Rather than teaching someone how to use a specific implementation, it enables its reader to approach any implementation and understand why it was designed the way it was, and what impacts these decisions were made. In spite of that, it would be nice if Comer spent even more time explaining why certain decisions were made.

Now, I am using Steven's book as a reference as I am dealing with BSD networking code. However, I would be lost if I didn't learn the principles, concepts, and designs provided by Comer. If you can, get both books -- but start with this one.

About the Author
Banesh Hoffmann (1906-86) received his PhD from Princeton University. At Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, he collaborated with Albert Einstein and Leopold Infeld on the classic paper "Gravitational Equations and the Problem of Motion." Hoffmann taught at Queens College for more than 40 years.

Relativity in Perspective

Relativity and Its Roots straddles the line between physics and history of science. It explores the development of an idea. You'd expect a book with "Relativity" in its title to concentrate on Einstein, especially as it is written by one of his colleagues. In fact Einstein does not enter the picture till the penultimate chapter. The story of Relativity starts with the Greeks and takes time to tell.

What I found most useful was Hoffmann's exploration of the thought processes of the scientists who advanced the theory. They often do not follow the standard stories of scientific discovery. Maxwell developed his theory of Electromagnetism not by thinking of mathematical symmetry but by following a mechanistic explanation of phenomena. He then removed this mechanistic scaffolding leaving us with the elegant mathematical theory. You come away from the book with new insights into both the way the universe works and the way great minds think.

Both the scientifically trained and the layman can learn from the book. It is written without equations in the main body. They can be found in the notes for those who appreciate them.

On Hoffmann's "Relativity and its Roots"

Many books attempt to expound the complexities of modern thinking in physics, but few achieve their objective as well as Hoffmann's "Relativity and its Roots." Hoffmann gives a superb overview of the history of thought in physics. He also gives vibrant descriptions of difficult concepts, leading the reader in the most natural way toward a solid understanding of Relativity theory and the foundations upon which it is built. In my opinion, this book ranks with the best of popular expositions both on the history of scientific thought in physics, and on modern physics itself. I recommend it for the non-initiated as well as for the seasoned scientist.

fascinating and approachable

Relativity and its Roots is more than an assembly of Einstein's work, it's a rich volume of scientific history leading up to his discoveries. The book starts with the early philosophical and geometrical ideas of the greeks and guides the reader up to and beyond the breakthroughs made in the middle ages. Complete with dozens of explanitory diagrams, it's one read that will change your perception of our universe.
