Before his family was arrested by Nazis in their Romanian village and transported by cattle car to Auschwitz in 1944, the devout, studious future Nobel Peace laureate had plunged into Jewish mysticism, hoping that his Kabbalistic prayers and formulas might ward off impending tragedy. In the concentration camps, he came to know his formerly aloof and deeply loved father, Shlomo, a rabbi, whose death in Buchenwald in 1945 left Wiesel, then 16, numb. Living in a French orphanage, he learned of the deaths of his mother and younger sister, and was reunited with the two sisters who survived. Wiesel, who gradually recovered his religious fervor, wrestles with the problem of having faith in the post-Holocaust era. As a Paris-based journalist aiding the Jewish resistance movement in Palestine, he discovered his calling?to testify to Nazi genocide, to justify his own survival. Moving to New York in the mid-1950s as correspondent for an Israeli paper, he covered civil rights struggles, the Eichmann trial in Israel and the 1967 Six Day War, befriended Golda Meir and David Ben-Gurion and supported persecuted Soviet Jews. His ascetic bachelor existence ended when he fell in love with and married Marion in 1969. He writes also of his formative friendships with Yiddish poet/thinker Abraham Yeoshua Heschel, Talmudic scholars Gershom Scholem and Saul Leiberman and itinerant mystic rabbi Mordechai Rosenbaum ("Shushani"). About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. in operations research from Yale.

Excellent book but be careful before buying !!

This book is a excellent book in that it provides a unified approach to business-related problems by integrating methods and applications that have been traditionally taught in separate courses, specifically statistics and management science. In addition, the book emphasizes realistic business examples and the processes managers actually use to analyze business problems.
But before buying the book, make a sure that it has a access to a website which has samples used in the book. Without the samples in the website, the value of this book is none.

Using it to "self-teach" and transition from Web Analyst to Business Analyst (Business Analytics Analyst)

So far, this book is invaluable. I was an English major; then, ended up in analytics, so there are quite of few information gaps, even though I have Master's in Information Systems Management. When I got a new position that was decidedly more business intelligence/analytics focused than my previous position in Web Analytics at IBM (5+ years) and since I don't have a business education, I needed to quickly get up to speed on the fundamentals of BA. I'm so glad I rented this book. I also love that Amazon allows you to put your rental monies toward the purchase of the book, if you so choose. I'm on my second rental period and plan on buying the book. I'm using this to self-teach, if you will, since I don't have the time, money or motivation to return back to school. With this book, I'm off to a great start and feeling more confident about my skills and new position.

I would have loved to keep it but I just rented it.

I just rented this book for about $50 and I had to return it after the semester ended. However, of all my MBA book that I have bought and breadths one I would have loved to keep. Absolutely superb instructions on statistical analysis. Step by step instructions to maximize excel. Just make sure you have it loaded on a windows based system because the mac version for excel is incomplete. Let me write a review on microsoft products...oh that would be a book.

Michael F. DiPaola received his EdD from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He joined the faculty of the Educational Policy, Planning & Leadership Program in the School of Education at The College of William & Mary in August, 1998 after spending almost three decades in public schools, serving as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and district superintendent. His teaching and research interests include the interactions of professionals in school organizations, school leadership, the superintendency, and performance evaluation.

Wayne K. Hoy, a public school mathematics teacher,received his EdD from The Pennsylvania State University in 1965. He taught at Oklahoma State University, before moving to Rutgers University in 1968, where he was a distinguished professor, department chair, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. In 1994, he was selected as the Fawcett Chair in Educational Administration at The Ohio State University. He is past secretary-treasurer of the National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA), past president of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), and recipient of the Roald Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award in Educational Administration. He and his wife Anita are authors of Instructional Leadership: A Research-Based Guide to Learning in Schools (Allyn & Bacon, 2006).

About the Author
Wayne K. Hoy received his B. S. from Lock Haven State College in 1959 and then taught mathematics at Cheltenham High School in Pennsylvania. He received his D. Ed. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1965 and began his professorial career at Oklahoma State University. He moved to Rutgers University in 1968, where he was a distinguished professor, department chair, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. In 1994, he joined the faculty at The Ohio State University as an endowed professor, The Novice G. Fawcett Chair in Educational Administration. In January of 2013, he retired and is now a professor emeritus at The Ohio State University. In 1973, he received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching from Rutgers University; in 1987, he received the Alumni Award for Professional Research from the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education; in 1991, he received the Excellence in Education Award from The Pennsylvania State University; in 1992, he received the Meritorious Research Award from the Eastern Educational Research Association; in 1996, he became an alumni fellow of The Pennsylvania State University; in 2001 he received the Research Award from the Ohio State College of Education. He is past secretary-treasurer of the National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) and past president of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA). In November 2003, he received the Roald Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award in Educational Administration and in 2009 he was elected a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. He is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of 24 books in the fields of research and theory, educational administration, decision making, leadership, and instructional supervision. Three of his recent books are Instructional Leadership: A Research-based Guide to Learning in Schools (2013), with his wife Anita Woolfolk Hoy; Educational Administration: Theory, Research and Practice (2013), with Cecil Miskel; and Improving Instruction Through Supervision, Evaluation, and Professional Development (2014), with Michael DiPaola.

The content is light; however, what the text lacks in content it makes up in vignettes and discussion questions. Recommend complementing with another text or journal articles to support responses to discussion questions.

This is what I don't understand. First off, who wears a skirt and a SHEER tank top to go hiking and with her family no less?! Secondly, the guy automatically assumes that the young virgin wants him and gives her INJURED leg a massage, intent on having sex with her. Oh but then when she responds positively, he tells her that she should really be with a boy her own age. Really?! Was that his version of being upstanding? I am so tired of reading lines in books that say " My young teenage..." Yes, we get that you are a teenager, you said that you are eighteen in the beginning, it bares no need to draw attention to it continuously. Between the umpteenth amount of typos and the rush of the story coupled with everything else, I didn't like the story and would never recommend it.

About the Author
Dr. Robert A. Weinberg is a founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. He is the Daniel K. Ludwig Professor for Cancer Research and the American Cancer Society Research Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Weinberg is an internationally recognized authority on the genetic basis of human cancer and was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science by President Clinton in 1997.

The State of the Art as it is Known Today.

This textbook, aimed at the advanced undergraduate and graduate biology and medical students covers the basic biology of cancer at the molecular andcellular level. Research into cancer in many different directions has been continuing at an accelerated pace since about World War II. In 1975 a major breakthrough was made by H.E. Varmus and J.M. Bishop on San Francisco. The result has been the creation of the new branch of biology covered by this book.

The amount of information discovered in the three decades since then has given us an immense database on the root causes of cancer. The basic discovery that cancer is not one disease but many, some 110 at last count, has led to vast amounts of data.

This book begins to lay out the underlying laws and principles that are beginning to emerge from that data. At the same time, this book is written as a recruiting pamphlet to attract new generations of researchers to move the science forward. While the book points out the discoveries that have been made, it also points out areas where questions remain.

At 850 pages, this is a large book, covering an immense amount of material. In addition there is a CD-ROM with even more material. It has figures, tables, micrographs loaded into Powerpoint presentations that cover each chapter which provides an excellent study aid. There are mini-lectures on various subjects. There are also several movies that will aid in the understanding of some of the processes involved.

A poster 'The Pathways of Human Cancer' summarizes many of the signaling pathways implicated in tumor development. This poster has been produced by Cell Signaling Technology.

The rate of development in the field means that this book will need a new edition shortly, but for the moment this represents the state of the art as it is known today.

Comprehensive

As a colorectal cancer survivor, I've undertaken a self-study of my cancer in particular, and the disease in general. Saltz's Colorectal Cancer is the comprehensive text for me, but it is better read with a foundation in the nuts and bolts of the disease. Sompayrac's How Cancer Works is a wonderful text for explaining what the nuts and bolts are, but this book, Biology of Cancer, not only explains these in better detail, it also explains how researchers figured all this out. The illustrations, graphs and photos are worth the price of the book itself--you can see the discoveries unfold in front of your own eyes. You don't have to be a scientist to start reading it, but you will probably have to become something of a scientist and retain what you are absorbing as you progress through the book. This is a textbook that is something of an all-star collection of information from a variety of scientific research textbooks.

Excellent, Fascinating, Well-Written

This is one of the best books that I have read on any topic. The science of cancer is fascinating because it involves almost all aspects of cell biology. This book presents the subject in a clear, well-organized manner based on the experimental evidence. The author draws conclusions carefully always including possible alternative explanations so the reader senses the full complexity of the problem. He expresses a welcome skepticism about current cancer treatments and frankly discusses the controversies involved. The author has successfully organized a huge body of information in a way that makes it easy to read and understand.

Is Your Child Ready For This Much Awesomeness?

This book was definitely meant for the type of kid/adult who enjoys the Series of Unfortunate Events. The author intrusions were very similar... and equally brilliant. It was an incredibly fun book to read.

Now, for my advice as a parent...

Some reviews have noted that the book is scary. While the intensity was definitely heightened at the end, I think they're all referring to the scene very reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom--the human sacrifice scene and the implication that there will also be cannibalism in some form. It all takes place in front of a cult group in a pyramid. (So, it's very like that Indiana Jones scene--minus the lava, but there is a giant bonfire.) While the child due to be killed is not one of the main kids and is ultimately saved, there have been previous missing kids who weren't so lucky. It's not graphic per se. The villain describes what he is going to do and makes preparations to do it. In a previous scene, there is a character who drinks something that possibly contains blood and there are implications that the "Fountain of Youth" concoctions they're all drinking contain some essence of previously killed victims... though it's really glossed over and not focused on.

The main characters in this are eleven years old, but kids generally read up so you'd expect kids aged 8-11 to be interested. On the other hand, how do you know your child has reached that crucial "I'm okay with human sacrifice and implied cannibalism" stage? I have a nine and a ten year old, and I'm not entirely sure this wouldn't give my ten year old nightmares. She's a bit more sensitive.

I still whole-heartedly recommend it. It was pure genius from beginning to end, but sensitive kids or kids who visualize far beyond the book's details might want to wait until they're older.

WOW! Bosch is Brilliant!

This is truly a great book! It is a wondrous read that I couldn't put down and I didn't want to end. This engaging book pulled me in on the first page and I couldn't let go. It is an amusing, intriguing and well thought out mystery, but it is also an inspiring and magical story. It's like a comedy-action-adventure-mystery with magic. It was pure joy to read and easily the best book I have read this year. I have already begun reading it again. Once you enter the world of Cass and Max-Ernest you will never want to leave. It is a kid's book but like Harry Potter before it, everyone can get wrapped up in the world Bosch creates. I really loved this book and recommend it to anyone who likes to read. This book is a MUST!!!

I'm sorry Mr. Bosch...

...but this book won't be a secret for long and you have only yourself to blame! You've "spilled the beans" and with them made the most irresistable dish of alchemy and intrigue that had me giggling and engaged with every page. Thank you for making the "footnote" something to look forward to (where else can kids and adults alike get a humorously concise yet accurate explanation of Art Nouveau, Mussolini and synesthesia?) and surprising me with plot twists (and puzzles!) when I least expected them. My apologies, sir, but I will not keep this secret. This holiday season I know what I'll be giving all the readers I know: The deliciously secret story by the charmingly pendantic Pseudonymous Bosch.
