About the Author

Dr. K.M. Gupta is a professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad, India. He earned his diploma in mechanical engineering (Hons), bachelor of engineering (AMIE) in mechanical engineering and ME (Hons) in 1977. He earned his PhD from the University of Allahabad. His research interests are in the fields of materials science, composite materials, stress analysis, and solid mechanics. Professor Gupta has authored 28 books, and 120 papers, and is the editor-in-chief of two journals, The International Journal of Materials, Mechanics and Manufacturing(IJMMM), and International Journal of Materials Science and Engineering (IJMSE).

Most Comprehensive Single Volume Text on the Islamic Faith

greetings to one and all!

As a lay Muslim reader and student of the faith, i have read many, and examined most, Islamic books (from bookstores and to libraries) dealing exclusively with the theology of Islam; in my search, i have found very few books that can match the dimensions and depth of Islam covered by this eminent Lahori scholar, Maulana Muhammad Ali, in this single volume, The Religion Islam.

The Maulana takes the reader on journey of Islam, using the most authentic of sources, and under the most authoritative of interpretation. The writer was undoubtedly one hundred years ahead of his time; he has addressed any and everything a believer or sceptic wants to know about the religion of Islam; from revelation to modernity; from angels to devils; from rituals and sacred practices to rights and obligations; from polygamy to apostasy, and a host of other subject.

The Maulana's magnus opus is his: The Holy Qur'an, Arabic Text, Translation and Commentary.

Caveat: the Maulana was an original founding member of the original Ahmadiyya movement, under Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, after whose death, the movement broke apart. The Maulana founded the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha`at Islam and moved to Lahore*.

English revert and translator of the Qur'an, Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall, in reviewing the "Religion of Islam" stated words to the effect that "this book has not moved a hair's breath from Islam's sacred orthodoxy."

Final note: anyone (believer, sceptic or atheist), seriously thinking of understanding Islam as a faith and as a way of life, should avail him/herself to the Maulanas' two primary publications: the Translation of the Quran, and the Religion of Islam, both of which i recommend without reservation or hestitation.

*i am NOT an Ahmadi; i'm just an ordinary seeker of knowledge on the road to Truth!

Best Book on Islam

I have read several dozen books on Islam, including old and new but by far this is the best book on Islam. Originally written in early twentieth century, it is very elequently written, discuss all the important topics in very details.

The is a wonderful treatise on Islam. Through this book one can understand and see clearly the gentle teachings of Islam (submission to God's Will). Ali does and incredible job with both this book and his translation and commentary of the Qu'ran. If you want to understand Islam there is no better book than this. Particularly if you are converting from the Christian tradition or culture.

About the Author

Arlene Skolnick, Ph.D., is a Visiting Scholar at the sociology department at New York University, and a consultant to the Families and Work Institute. For many years she was a member of the research staff at the Institute of Human Development, at the University of California, Berkeley, where she worked on the Berkeley Longitudinal Studies, examining the emotional lives and marriages of study members as they evolved from childhood to middle age. More recently, Professor Skolnick has been studying the sources and impact of job stress on the families of police officers. She has also taken part in several interdisciplinary projects dealing with social science, law and family policy. In recent years, she helped to organize a monthly Family Policy Seminar at Berkeley, and co-edited the book that grew out of the seminar: All Our Families: New Policies for a New Century. Professor Skolnick has published a number of other books and articles on marriage and the family, including Family in Transition and Embattled Paradise: The American Family in an Age of Uncertainty. She is currently at work on a book entitled The Unfinished Family: The Future of Love and Work.

Jerome Skolnick, a sociologist, currently teaches at the New York University School of Law where he is Co-Director of the Center for Research in Crime and Justice. He is also Claire Clements Dean’s Professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was Chair of the Center for the Study of Law and Society. He has written many books and articles and has received numerous grants, honors and awards in recognition of his research and scholarship. These include the August Vollmer award of the American Society of Criminology; awards for distinguished scholarship from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the Western Society of Criminology; the Mills award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (for Justice Without Trial); election to the honorary Sociological Research Association; and a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship. He was Director of the Task Force on Violent Protest and Confrontation of the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence, Washington, D.C. 1968-1969 and served as President of the American Society of Criminology from November 1993 through November 1994. In 1997, he completed a three year term as Chair of the National Academy of Science/ National Research Council's Committee on Law and Justice. In 1996 he was honored by John Jay College of Criminal Justice as their Criminal Justice Educator of the Year.

Excellent Overview for Students of Family Life

This 14th edition of a classic text in family studies provides an excellent look at family styles in the early 21st century. Although the bulk of the book is North American in content and origin, there is useful material here from other cultural perspectives.

Especially helpful is the section on parenting (section 7) which includes a careful study of current trends in adoption. Within the U.S., individual states are changing public policy in ways that benefit families who include non-birth children within their household. Recent U.S. federal policy also encourages this process.

Another useful section reviews "work and family life." (section 9) Here is one of the best sociological studies of the way our current economy impacts family roles, structures, and outcomes. More study is needed here; this is a topic well worth exploring.

Overall, the 14th edition continues to build on an excellent platform that Jerome and Arlene Skolnick have provided and edited.

Good but a difficult read

This book has a collaboration of authors and the writing style varies greatly from one chapter to the next. Some are very difficult to read and can turn an interesting topic into a snooze fest.

Overall it is a very good book that looks at different points of view (i.e., conservative, liberal, feminist). I couldn't rate it that high though because it was difficult to read.

Not very happy especially with quality the price that was paid for it.

Eustace Mullins is a WORLD HERO. Get ALL HIS WORKS FREE at his website eusticemullins DOT us. Also his nephew is selling his works on ebay FOR MUCH MUCH LESS THAN AMAZON PIRATES. His other major works, The World Order and Secrets of the Federal Reserve are a MUST for the NON-Programmed or Deluded who are interested in REAL HISTORY, not bankster satanic history that's spoon fed to us throughout our lives. I can't recommend Eustace Mullins works more.

Extremely significant

This work has been a profound influence on my own work. Written as a continuation of Mullins' research on the Federal Reserve system, commissioned by Ezra Pound, this delves into the Rothschild World system behind World affairs:

Chapter 1 focuses on the Rothschilds, the City of London, and the expansion of the power structures these people set up, which form the basis of the present World Order.

Chapter 2 shows how Soviet communism was in reality an extension of international finance capitalism.

Chapter 3 shows how World War II was a managed conflict.

Chapter 4 shows how the American aristocracy was/is an extension of the Rothschild empire.

Chapter 5 delves into the CIA and British intelligence, and it's ties to the power structures already established.

Chapter 6 looks into the political influence of the Bechtel corporation.

Chapter 7 looks into the network of control established by various interlocking tax-exempt foundations.

Chapter 8 delves into a broad, historical overview of this hegemony of parasitism.

My only problem with Eustace Mullins is that he made mistakes. However, he did transmit to the American people Ezra Pound's knowledge of the history of the parasitic class and their techniques of control. Pound unfortunately flirted with bigotry, but he did not make the kind of mistakes Mullins did, and was absolutely correct on the subject of international finance.

About the Author
E.E. Goulaev's only publishing endeavor is his 1897 translation of My Life in Christ from the original Russian. Nicholas Kotar is a recent graduate of Holy Trinity Seminary. He also holds a degree in Russian Literature from UC Berkeley. He is also a founding member of Conquering Time, an ensemble of performance, visual, and literary artists inspired by the Inklings that stages original works of storytelling and traditional music and publishes new poetry and prose. Ivan Ilyich Sergiev (1829-1908), known to his contemporaries as Fr John of Kronstadt, was the most revered figure of the Orthodox Church in Russia in the half-century leading up to the Bolshevik revolution of 1917.

A wise assessment of America and her problems

If anyone ever has a doubt as to Mitt Romney's presidential qualifications, experience, knowledge, intentions, and principles, s/he should read this book. I have never read such an insightful and inspiring book about America and the issues we face today. I wish it was required reading for every high schooler in America.

We've become jaded as a nation regarding America and politics in this country. Politicians who promise the world but fail to deliver has become the status quo. We accept that as a given. We know that when we vote, we are choosing the lesser of two evils. Not so with Mitt Romney. After reading this book, I trust him implicitly to make the right decisions for this country and for the world.

Romney knows what he is talking about when it comes to domestic and foreign policy. He puts forth solutions to our most devastating problems in this country---solutions based on his extensive experience, research, collaboration with specialists, and bipartisan thinking. Romney doesn't accept the popular ignorant assumptions that are so pervasive in this country. He doesn't bow to special interests. And he doesn't accept the status quo.

I hope Romney's bipartisan vision for this country is something for which we all strive. I wish many Americans weren't so full of hate toward opposing views that they are unwilling to even listen. Instead they demonize and drown out opposing views with a cacophony of libelous attacks. In contrast, the Romney way of working together to get things done is a model for this country and for individuals. He believes in America. So should we all.

interesting but dated memoir

I should state that i enjoyed this book and though not american,am sympathetic to his views. The crux of his argument seems to be he does agree there is a moral decline in values,but the Santornum/Gingrich approach is wrong and he doesnt find it particularly american or proper. His approach is for citizens to be more interested in their nation,develop priorities and values,and he is concerned about the decline in marriages and babies born out of wedlock but he sees his opponents as not really understanding the issue. Are they simpleminded..to castigate massachussets electorate as being liberal,if in fact they are,he does see the issue as being constitutional,and that people must develop values from the origins of the u.s. based on freedom in various aspects,and that is a better approach rather than one advocated in statist approaches to banning abortion...and many other problems. He doesnt go this far,but i sense he sees that people must voluntarily decide to live this way and adopt these values,but are Santornum's endorsers or Gingrich's taking this view? These are the divergent approaches in the republican camp,and the religous backers of Santornum and gingrich have moved away from the traditional american perspective which Romney and hopefully the tea party are advocating. Most of the book is filled with criticisms of the current Obama administration in terms of healthcare and education and reforms he hopes to enact,and in education Obama and the states are already moving in that direction. He has set the agenda in this election and most of the debate is centered around him as a person or his ideas. That is regarding a person whom at the start of the campaign no one took seriously,but the results in puerto rico like much else leaves everyone shaking their head. But time is running out for his opponents. Very often a political candidate can shore up his support with those he attracts around him,and the states is a big country,and his support among other subgroups is an unknown factor. His prowess as a debator has also been underestimated,and with the new pac support,the tv ads,supreme court
imponderables,unknown factors,this election is up for grabs. His main advantage is his recourse to the origins of america,and devising a policy and platform and their to relocate what america should be,something his opponents he finds are not doing,since they have all been in government too long,and he will tell you that is the approach which he outlines in this book,to reverse the decline.The book is dated in terms of the military..iraq...afghanistan...and we dont know how his views have changed..Trump and paul in the republican camp have taken different points of view from him,,,and obama may score points for taking up some of these views...also military establishments in other parts of the world may have been cut for unknown reasons. Any election is up for grabs and everyone should read this as well as obama's book although they may be dated..Obama is still a seasoned opponent good debator and has made many changes in his views since the debacle in greece..who can predict this election?

A true story of survival and courage. This was a quick and easy read. A lot of the story was repeated throughout the book which was probably the only thing I didn't like as it dragged on a bit. Overall it was inspiring.

A wonderfully kind and generous couple for adopting two homeless Indian children. Saroo was very fortunate in the kind people he came in contact with and he showed great perseverance in tracking down his original home. I would highly recommend this book.
