This was a required book for my Spanish class, however I ended up having to re-purchase it through the school, because I also needed the hard back that came along with the CD. Now I'm stuck with this extra softback book :(

ridiculously expensive

Nice format. Friendly and accessible. BUT, at this price I understand why the feds have intervened in the free market of texbook publishing. This thing is absurdly expensive. Seems to me that it can be published a whole lot cheaper than this, especially insofar as there is not much to distinguish most Intro to Spanish texbooks from each other. I can afford the cost of this book, but let's get real, not many college students have money to throw around in these sums. AND this would be only for one course. Add the workbook and we are talking about > $200.00.

Great book but missing Internet code

Book was in fine condition and shipped quickly. We did, however, discover that there is a small card that comes with this book with a code to use the connected web site. So, beware! Make sure the card code is included otherwise , like me, you will wind up paying $55 for a key code on the website.

About the Author
Among other things, Dede is Italian. Her grandparents came from Capracotta, Italy in 1913 through Ellis Island and the ship’s manifest clearly states that they were not anarchists. Neither is she, but she is an artist. After over twenty years as a public school art teacher, Dede left the classroom to direct the California Arts Project at San Jose State University. She left the suburbs to settle in a vintage San Francisco home where she entertains friends and family on her garden roof deck. She is active in the Aquatic Park Neighbors, volunteering her time and talents. Dede can frequently be seen in the mornings trudging up the hills of North Beach with her walking buddies looking for inspiration or having coffee in the local cafes. Harvey describes himself as a recovering bureaucrat. After almost 30 years in public service, when the kids left home and the dog died, he and his wife Sandy pulled up stakes and left the suburbs behind. After much soul-searching they decided that the big city was for them. Not just any big city, but San Francisco. After more than a decade in “Bagdad by the Bay” it still seems fresh and new to them. From the beginning Harvey had a passion for local history, lore and mythology of San Francisco. His interest led him to City Guides (sfcityguides.com), an all volunteer organization that leads walking tours throughout San Francisco. For several years he has been giving visitors an insider’s view of his North Beach neighborhood. “I want our readers to know” he recently said “that this book is a labor of love and I hope they will forgive any oversights or liberties I’ve taken in the text about people and places”. For as Voltaire said “All the ancient histories…are just fables that have been agreed upon.”

An outstanding and visually exciting book that provides a historical and visual look into North Beach life. The map was especially useful in walking to each site -- a fun way to spend part of a day (with book clutched in hand). For those who live too far away to search out these alleyways, the written descriptions and watercolor paintings bring to life the city's colorful past and lively present.

Step by step, the authors then show how to implement the methods in Excel and Visual Basic for Applications. Focusing on risk management issues, the book covers default probability estimation (scoring, structural models, and transition matrices), correlation and portfolio analysis, validation, as well as credit default swaps and structured finance. Several appendices and videos increase ease of access.

The authors present a host of applications – many of which go beyond standard Excel or VBA usages. For example, they show how to estimate logit models with maximum likelihood, or how to conduct large-scale Monte Carlo simulations in little time. About the Author
GUNTER LÖFFLER is professor of finance at the University of Ulm in Germany. His current research interests are on credit risk and empirical finance. Previously, Gunter was assistant professor at Goethe University Frankfurt, and served as an internal consultant in the asset management division of Commerzbank. His Ph.D. in finance is from the University of Mannheim. Gunter has studied at Heidelberg and Cambridge Universities.

PETER N. POSCH is PhD student in finance at the chair of Gunter Löffler. His current research focus is on credit risk and financial econometrics. Peter studied philosophy and economics and holds a Diplom, M.Sc. equivalent, in economics from the University of Bonn.

There is no DVD in the book. But there is companion website to use which is great. The are few appendices at the end of the book that provide a crash course in preliminary topics needed to understand the technical content of the book. Depending on the reader's background you may need other sources first as a refresher for understanding statistical analysis topic like "Maximum Likelihood estimation"

Practical, but not superficial

Clearly, Excel is not even remotely the best platform to perform large scale credit risk modeling or analysis. However, Excel is probably the most concise, neutral platform from which to demonstrate the techniques involved in implementing the models discussed in the book.

** Note, please do not rely on this book as your main source for learning the mathematical and economical nuances of these models.

Beautiful pictures

This book organizes the myths of many different cultures by subject matter. I enjoyed the fact that it does not focus completely on Greek and Roman mythology but includes many other cultures as well. Unfortunately the text is somewhat dry, but the pictures make up for it. There are photographs of classical statuary, paintings and relics from all over the world. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mythology.

I just started getting into reading about different Mythologies and this was a great place for me to start. It covers a vast range of different myths from creation, the flood and other crazy stories from all over the world.

The Pictures are really clear and detailed and help drive the imagination.

I would have liked a little more information, some myths were vague, or just very little information. But as I said this was a great place for me to start and now if I wanted I could research different myths more in depth that interested me.

Definitely worth picking up and adding it your personal library.

Recently a friend of mine bought the other book by Dell about monsters and demons and I was awestruck with the illustrations. When I saw there was a mythology book I had to grab it. It's a great book over all, but the pictures aren't as exciting or fun as in the other book. So 4 stars for the content. I'd give it 4.5 if I could, but again I was hoping for more amazing illustrations like in the other book, no the classic illustrations within.

This book was surprisingly difficult to extract information from. I found it a great challenge to read through a section and determine what the authors' intended message was. It is quite probably my least favorite textbook ever purchased.

Biomechanics for ergonomics and occupational health

The book covers a wide range of topics from basic musculoskeletal structures and physiology to anthropometry data and biomechanical analysis of loading on tissues for various physical activities. Yet, the book is concise enough to be useful as a starter reading material for beginning biomechanists, and as a textbook for a graduate-level intro-biomechanics course. The book also covers ample topics on application of biomechanical principles to ergonomics and occupational health.

It aims to highlight how the exercise of ‘exceptional’ forms of power by intervening agencies�impacts on�the sovereign capacity of intervened states. Drawing upon in-depth analyses of three case studies – Kosovo, East Timor and the Kurdistan Regional Government, the book shifts the focus of the debate to the nature of contemporary intervention as an act of statemaking, and argues that foreign intervention changes the dynamics of political power upon which sovereignty is structured. At the same time, it reveals how intervention reproduces the imposed conditions of international state-making, thus permanently internalising external regulatory mechanisms. International intervention, in other words, becomes the constitutive element of governance in the newly created state.

This book will be of much interest to students of statebuilding, war and conflict studies, global governance, security studies and IR.
