The Amazing and worthwhile Leap

I have to admit to a fear of leaping from heights, which makes Mr Shindler's metaphor of a trapeze artist at the beginning of his excellent book so challenging for me. But that is the point, many of us find it challenging or seemingly impossible to make that leap, leaving us to be consigned to mediocrity and compromise.

As someone who likes to think of careers in Chaotic terms, the critical commentary around simplistic goal setting and the reference to David Clutterbuck's work are commendable.

As I read through I came to appreciate just how many good ideas are crammed into this valuable resource from attitude to presentation, learning to listening, from MARIA to PESTLE (clever acronyms that illustrate how to convey attitude and business experience). It is all seasoned with pithy quotes from Einstein, Victor Frankl, Leonardo DaVinci, Wittgenstein to the intellectual might of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and Marks and Spencers!!

This is a useful book for anyone wanting to make a leap in their career. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Toshio Mori (1910–1980) was born in Oakland, California. During World War II, he was interned, with his family, at the Topaz Relocation Center in Utah, where he served as camp historian. Xiaojing Zhou is professor of English at the University of the Pacific and author of Cities of Others: Reimagining Urban Spaces in Asian American Literature.

A much-underrated statement of Japanese-American identity.

Even though Sau-ling Cynthia Wong notes that "no
other Asian-American writer since has been able to
match Mori's community portraits for mellowness," his
portraits of Japanese-American life just before World War
II show the strain of a double identity at that time. (Even
the title itself serves to illustrate the cultural binary.)

Mori's prose is sparse, yet it is not cold. In all of the characters,
from Sessue Matoi, the philosopher who "must be drunk and
sober at the same time," to "the woman who makes swell
donuts," there is a warmth and humanity throughout every story,
even while the hints of the coming war begin to appear

This book was suppose to come out in print in 1941, but due to the attack on Pearl Harbor and anti-Japanese propaganda, it postponed its release until 1949. Toshio Mori is a master of storytelling. These collections of short stories should be with such classics as Hemingway and Saroyan. Yokohoma, California is both heart-felt and humorous. It is one of the best books on the Asian American experience.

I first discovered Mori's writing in an anthology, but when I heard he published collections of short stories, I had to find them. This collection is marvelous. If creative writing doesn't work out for me, I want to pursue academic study on Mori and the universality in his writing. His story go beyond Asian American literature. A must-read author for anyone interested in Asian American literature.

A great reference for mechanically challenged drivers.

This book is a valuable reference for all drivers who would like to understand how their cars work and how to talk to and understand a mechanic. It is well written and organized. I learned what many of those squeaks, clunks & chirps mean & how to do my own maintenance. I'm giving Lucille's to my neice for her 16th birthday.

Easy to read and understand book. Troubleshooting information that every driver should be aware of. Useful tips and hints to understanding and taking care of your car better. A little knowledge helps a lot from getting ripped off by auto mechanics and dealerships.

Note this is not a technical manual and does not instruct you how to repair your car.

Unfortunately the book I ordered was used and wreaked of cigarette smell. Book pages were still in very good condition.

I bought this book when my hubby threatened to leave me last year. He'd whined so much the previous 18 mo. that I said "just go". One thing he NEVER did for me was check oil, tire pressure, etc. I wanted to know basics of under the hood stuff and this book solved the problem.

These urban watersheds have their own set of concerns and problems. This volume is divided into three main sections as described in the subtitle: "Geology," "Contamination," and "Sustainable Development," with five main themes uniting the approach of the three sections (near-surface geology, water resources planning, industrial contamination, industrial remediation, and landscape planning). The first two sections occupy most of the book. This content tends to follow that of a typical contaminant hydrogeology textbook. However, it contains some interesting, unique chapters not typically found in such textbooks, including "Urban Geologic Mapping," "Metal Contamination in Urban Watersheds," and "Contaminant Risk Factors." The last section looks at the general impacts of urbanization and the disruptions of matter and energy flows due to human-generated and urban-related processes. Martin M. Kaufman is a professor of earth science at the University of Michigan-Flint. He has over 25 years of experience in geographic information systems, hydrologic investigations, and watershed management.

Daniel T. Rogers is currently the director of environmental affairs at Amsted Industries Incorporated. Throughout his career, Rogers has managed and conducted hundreds of geologic and hydrogeologic investigations and remediated and successfully closed industrial sites in the United States and internationally.

Kent S. Murray is a professor of geology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He has over 35 years experience in environmental geology, groundwater hydrology, and low-temperature geochemistry.
