A Great Introductory Resource

Dalton and Seidlhofer have written a good pronunciation introduction for those wishing to tackle this complex and often perplexing language system. The book is mostly theoretical, but never loses sight of the practical side of life.

"Pronunciation" covers aspects of pronunciation that include "the nature of speech sounds", intonation, connected speech, stress, teaching pronunication, concentrating on intonation, concentrating on connected speech and other chapters. Splashed throughout are reader tasks that highlight the points being made in very practical ways. For example, rather than just telling the read what happens in connected speech, they will give you a couple of example utterances to try, having a couple of questions for you to think about, and then deal with the point of it all.

Although not as "sample lesson" orientated as Gerald Kelly's How To Teach Pronunciation (Book with Audio CD), this is definitely a valuable resource to have around. It is exceptionally thorough and gives the reader an excellent overview of the topic. There are plenty of tasks to use in the class when you want to explore this system, but as said, they are not "sample lessons", per se. A very good book by any standard, I think.

Loshitzky (Univ. of East London, UK) here expands on her earlier fine work on cinema and politics: The Radical Faces of Godard and Bertolucci (CH, Sep'95, 33-0195) and Identity Politics on the Israeli Screen (CH, Jul'02, 39-6318). She works through contemporary European films that foreground migration, with the goal of describing each film's view of 'fortress Europe.' Loshitzky returns to Bernardo Bertolucci in Besieged (1998), while picking out Godardian elements in both Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine (1995) and Michael Winterbottom's 'Camp Trilogy' (In This World, Code 46, The Road to Guantanamo). She also discusses the Swiss film Journey of Hope (1990) and Stephen Frears's Dirty Pretty Things (2002). The range of films Loshitzky takes on is wide, but she makes no claim for comprehensiveness. She notes that she selects 'hegemonic' rather than 'minority discourse' films, i.e., films made by 'hosts' rather than 'strangers.' Given that principle of selection, this reviewer could have done with more unmasking of hegemonic ideology and less letting the films speak--however critically--for themselves. About the Author
ROBERT M. BOHM is professor of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He has also been a faculty member in the Departments of Criminal Justice at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1989–1995) and at Jacksonville State University in Alabama (1979–1989). From 1973 to 1974, he worked for the Jackson County Department of Corrections in Kansas City, Missouri, first as a corrections officer and later as an instructor/counselor in the Model Inmate Employment Program, a Law Enforcement Assistance Administration sponsored–work-release project. He received his PhD in Criminology from Florida State University in 1980. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters in the areas of criminal justice and criminology. Besides being the coauthor of Introduction to Criminal Justice, 4th ed. update (McGraw-Hill, 2007), he is the editor of The Death Penalty in America: Current Research, the author of A Primer on Crime and Delinquency Theory, 2nd ed., and Deathquest II: An Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Capital Punishment in the United States, 2nd ed., and an editor (with James R. Acker and Charles S. Lanier) of America’s Experiment with Capital Punishment: Reflections on the Past, Present, and Future of the Ultimate Sanction, 2nd ed., and Demystifying Crime and Criminal Justice (with Jeffery T. Walker). He has been active in the American Society of Criminology, the Southern Criminal Justice Association, and especially the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, having served as Trustee-at-Large (1987–90), Second Vice-President (1990–91), First Vice-President (1991–92), and President (1992–93). In 1989, he was selected as the Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Southern Criminal Justice Association. In 1999, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and, in 2001, he was presented with the Founder’s Award of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

KEITH N. HALEY is professor of Criminal Justice, teaching in both graduate and undergraduate degree programs in the School of Criminal Justice, and associate vice president for special projects at Tiffin University. Mr. Haley has also been the dean of the School of Criminal Justice, and the dean of the School of Off-Campus Learning at Tiffin University. He has acted as the primary contact for the TU MBA program in Bucharest, Romania, and the head of the Tiffin University Romania Study team that worked to establish a Master of Community Justice Administration degree program at the University of Bucharest. He has also served as coordinator of the criminal justice programs at Collin County Community College in Texas; executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission; chairman of the criminal justice program at the University of Cincinnati; police officer in Dayton, Ohio; community school director in Springfield, Ohio; director of the criminal justice program at Redlands Community College in Oklahoma; and electronics repairman and NCO in the U.S. Marine Corps. Haley holds a BS in Education from Wright State University and an MS in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. He is the author, coauthor, and/or editor of 12 books, several book chapters, and many articles in criminal justice publications. He has served as a consultant to many public service, university, business, and industrial organizations on management, online learning, criminal justice research, and memory skills. Haley is also the secretary of the police section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Haley received the 2001 Nikolai N. Khaladjan International Award for Innovation in Higher Education. The Khaladjan Award is given to the higher education program that is the most innovative and has the widest potential for impact on postsecondary education.

Pretty good book for the subject

Pretty good book for the subject, though a bit needlessly wordy (as most textbooks are).
Terrorism is a major topic throughout, which makes it much more interesting, but unfortunately that's as international as it gets, since this is a book on US law, not world law.

Jay Hilyard has been developing applications for the Windows platform for over 20 years, including .NET. He’s published numerous articles in MSDN Magazine. Jay currently works at Newmarket, an Amadeus company.

Stephen Teilhet started working with the pre-alpha version of the .NET platform and has been using it ever since. At IBM, he works as the lead security researcher on their static source code security analysis tool, which is used to find vulnerabilities in many different languages, including C# and Visual Basic.

A fantastic guide to have close at hand while coding. These solutions and tips can save developers a lot of time.

Steve and Jay have done a great job of improving on the 3rd edition, and have woven in many of the new C# 6.0 features. As always this book is designed to take a reader who already knows C# to the next level, by explaining the how and why associated with common C# development problems. The C# recipes provide a clear description of the problem, well written code examples, and commentary to explain why each recipe works. Readers will come away with a better understanding of the C# language, algorithms, and how to think about and approach common real world programming problems.

Morris did it again! I've worked on computer systems since before 1980 or so (back in the days of DOS 3.1)and I've never used a better trouble shooting guide! It's logical, straightforward and clear.

While it's not for a novice, no one should ever be intimidated by it. Gives a good deal of pointed guidance
in one place, which could not be gleaned in weeks or months of calling and e-mailing friends, associates or
tech service advisors!

If you've ever cracked a case on a system, you will benefit from this book! Current printing is right up to date! Reflects the latest technologies. On the other hand, if you don't know the difference between RAM and ROM, save your money and call a tech!
