Truly a god send of a dictionary for learning
By R. Derr
I really like this English-Vietnamese dictionary so much that I bought three more to give to each of my wife's family who have immigrated from Vietnam in the past few years. I love just looking at the pictures and then seeing both the English and Vietnamese words identifying the objects on the page by looking at the object's number below that has what it is in both languages. There are indexes in the back of the book in both languages so if you know the name of something, you can see what page it is on and find out what it is called in the other language. Very help

By Kmieanb
My first language is vietnamese and born in the states. However, my Vietnamese is not as fluent as I wished. So I ordered the Oxford Picture Dictionary and it was sooooo helpful. I can speak read and write Vietnamese, but more at a middle school level. I still find this book very useful. There are words I don't know that I can quickly scan thought the book and get the translation to Vietnamese. The pictures are clear with old colors. LOVE this book!! The first I ordered for myself and my friend enjoyed it as much as I did so I gave it to her and ordered another for myself!

If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise of American Liberty, by Eric Metaxas

#1 New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas delivers an extraordinary book that is part history and part rousing call to arms, steeped in a critical analysis of our founding fathers' original intentions for America.

In 1787, when the Constitution was drafted, a woman asked Ben Franklin what the founders had given the American people. "A republic," he shot back, "if you can keep it." More than two centuries later, Metaxas examines what that means and how we are doing on that score.

If You Can Keep It is at once a thrilling review of America's uniqueness—including our role as a "nation of nations"—and a chilling reminder that America's greatness cannot continue unless we embrace our own crucial role in living out what the founders entrusted to us. Metaxas explains that America is not a nation bounded by ethnic identity or geography, but rather by a radical and unprecedented idea, based on liberty and freedom for all. He cautions us that it's nearly past time we reconnect to that idea, or we may lose the very foundation of what made us exceptional in the first place.

Eric Metaxas's latest book, Martin Luther, will be available from Viking in Fall 2017.

A good kind of political
By Doug Hibbard
I cannot help but think many will dismiss Metaxas' latest as a simple political tome. After all, he's fairly well pigeon-holed on the "conservative" side of the fence in modern life. However, this is more of a historical review than a candidate advocacy book.

First of all, Metaxas reviews the founding of the United States. Obviously, for the sake of time, he simplifies some of the history but does not take excessive liberty. I do think that some debate is valid over the religious views of the Founding Fathers (Jefferson, especially) but Metaxas is right that they were all convinced of the need for a morality based outside of human preference for self-governance.

Second, the charge here is clear: liberty is the heritage of America but we are foolishly giving it away. He identifies both liberal and conservative errors that are confounding our heritage.

In all, a good challenging read. May it inform not only votes but our approach to a republic and liberty as a whole.

Most important book to read this summer!
By Lancia E. Smith
I have not read anything in the past couple of decades that has stirred in me so much a sense of the fragile and awesome responsibility of what it means to be American. This is a book written to reach the hearts of Americans who love America but whose memory of our precious identity has been covered with tarnish. Citations for the many references would have earned this title a 5 star review, but even without them, I can say this is very likely the most important book you can read this year. What Eric Metaxas does well, he does better than just about anyone. He stirs memory, longing, and calling while shining a light forward. Few books you read this year will give you a greater sense of hope or accountability! Buy it, read it, and give copies to your loved ones! Who of us does not need to remember how precious a gift and responsibility we have to uphold America?

Inspiring, sobering, encouraging -- all at once.
By southern grammy
To say this new book by Eric Metaxas is timely is an understatement. We all need to be encouraged to see something hopeful both in the past and in the future of our nation. "If You Can Keep It" is not written in the style of a history textbook, rather it is a passionate appeal to remember together some of the inspiring stories of America, to celebrate our heroes, to become familiar again with the faithful intentions and beautiful writings of some of the great leaders of the past.
After reading this book, I am inspired to re-read historical accounts and biographies of people like William Wilberforce, Hannah More, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, George Whitefield, and Nathan Hale. I'd love to read some original documents and letters written by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Winthrop. I'm reminded that what they valued and what they fought for was important then, and is still important now.
Reading this book is like gathering around to listen as a great storyteller recounts the story of Squanto and the example of leadership from Cinncinatus. The chapter on the importance of moral leaders shows us that it is possible for leaders to care about setting a standard of light that shines in the darkness. I enjoyed references in this book to positive messages found in personal favorites such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, as a reminder of how the arts are important for encouraging a culture of virtue and exposing the vice in our society or system of government. (And I'd like to read Os Guinness' book that talks about The Golden Triangle of Freedom, since that idea inspired Eric to write this new book in the first place!)
To sum up why this book is important, I'll share a quote: "By deciding that every potential hero is too flawed to celebrate and venerate, or that such stories are somehow corny, we have done a grave disservice to several generations and to the country. We've not only denied our citizens the inspirational stories of those who have made great sacrifices from which we benefit but have also denied several generations the knowledge of what it really means to be an American - and have denied them the appropriate sense of patriotism that everyone longs to feel. Love of one's country is among the fundamental joys of what it means to be human." Metaxas then describes beautifully what an appropriate love of country means: not jingoistic, but seeing the flaws along with the potential and promise of good. Having read four books by Eric Metaxas, this may be my favorite. The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I was hoping for more citations, end notes or a bibliography to aid in the further reading that this book inspires! I received an early copy of this book to give an honest review. But I would have pre-ordered it anyway and would have written the same review!

The Play of Everyman, Based on the Old English Morality Play (Classic Reprint), by Hugo Von Hofmannsthal

It is to Mr. Richard Ordynski that I am indebted for the privilege and pleasure of setting to English blank verse Hugo von Hofmannsthal sversion of that play of all time, Everyman. Everyman in the original is a stiff and raw fabric, but destined, perhaps, to outlast many a more gorgeous woof. However, one needs but to read it in its English form to realize the extent to which von Hofmansthal has vivified and humanized the play, adding thereto powerfully of the dramatic and emotional elements. The appeal of Everyman to the medieval mind must have been vast, for it was a childs mind, and therefore one to be moved far more greatly by things seen than by things preached. But though the moral pill was deftly enough sugar-coated for the audience of those distant days, Everyman can but seem a somewhat crude and unconvincing affair to the pampered and sophisticated public of today. I may perhaps compare it to the stark simplicity of a boardwalk, though it has, for that matter, all the directness of such a structure, what of its deadly sincerity. But when, over fifteen years ago, I saw the leading character presented by an actress of charm and talent, it required all of that ladys skill to hold me and my friends.

No spoilers here!
By Amazon Customer Carmen
I was initially reluctant to read yet another young adult series because they all seem to fall into the same category of boring lately. However, I got the 1st book in the series for free and said to myself, what the hay. I am thrilled to say I could not put it down and was very upset that it had ended. I clicked on my trusty Amazon link, typed in the author's name and the rest is history. I love the characters and the way they seem to grow and mature with each book. There is some violence and I found my eyes watering a few times when characters passed that I had grown to like. I purchased all of the books that were available in a two day period. Now I have a bunch of ebooks waiting for me to read. I guess you are wondering why I have not given any names or even hinted at the plots? Well, I want you to read for yourself. I hate book reviews that practically tell the who story like a mini version of cliff notes so I refuse to do it. Just read them!

The Complete Katon University Series
By GaleC
Wonderful series. Having all the books together keeps the continuity of the story flowing. The characters are well rounded and interesting. You find yourself experiencing their emotions as though you were there and rooting for them to suceed. These are people I would like to have as my friends. The story grabs you and will not let go - you have to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading more about the main characters as I understand they are also in the upcoming series 'Mosaic'.

but I am so glad I did
By Saudalia Spencer
I have not read a lot of YA Fiction. When I read the first book of this series I wanted to read more about the characters. I'm not sure how or where I heard from Andrea Pearson's books, but I am so glad I did. The story did not disappoint me, on the contrary I love it. I love the characters, how the story develops and how they grow to become stronger in their magical powers, the strong friendship they have and the kind of YA they become throughout all the books. After I finished book 5 (Reclaim) I wanted to read more about Nicole and Austin. I love it!!!! Thanks Andrea!!!!

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 6-- Golenbock has taken a single moment of baseball history, set it in its social context, and created a simple and moving tribute to courage and brotherhood. While other biographies of Robinson, and Robinson himself in I Never Had It Made (Putnam, 1972; o.p.), set the incident in Boston, Golenbock places it in Cincinnati, near Reese's Kentucky home. The event occurred during Jackie Robinson's first season with the Dodgers. Listening to the hatred that spilled out of the stands, Pee Wee Reese left his position at shortstop, walked over to Robinson at first base, put his around Robinson's shoulder, chatted for a few moments, and then returned to his position. The crowd was stunned into silence. Bacon has illustrated the book with an effective blend of photographs and drawings. Golenbock briefly but clearly describes the background of Robinson's entry into the National League, as well as Reese's background as a southerner and as the player with the most to fear if Robinson were successful--both men were shortstops (although Robinson would ultimately play second base). There have been several recent books about Robinson for young readers, such as David Adler's Jackie Robinson: He Was the First (Holiday, 1989) and Jim O'Connor's Jackie Robinson and the Story of All-Black Baseball (Random, 1989), but none of them have the style or dramatic impact of Golenbock and Bacon's work. This is a wonderful and important story, beautifully presented, but the geographic confusion is disturbing. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA

Set in 1947, Teammates concerns a little-known episode about Brooklyn Dodgers' second baseman Jackie Robinson and the integration of baseball. When Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese, incensed by the abuse coming from a Cincinnati crowd, determined to "take a stand," he put an arm around his teammate's shoulder; this simple gesture symbolized the end of the "color line" in major league baseball--and the beginning of a great friendship. The book's appropriately ironic beginning talks of a time "when automobiles were black and looked like tanks and laundry was white and hung on clotheslines to dry." Golenbock then introduces the Negro Leagues, enumerates the many differences between them and the Major Leagues, and credits Dodger general manager Branch Rickey with finding "one special man" who would exemplify great ballplaying and thereby eradicate the prejudices of the fans. Golenbock's bold and lucid style distills this difficult issue, and brings a dramatic tale vividly to life. Bacon's spare, nostalgic watercolors, in addition to providing fond glimpses of baseball lore, present a haunting portrait of one man's isolation. Historic photographs of the major characters add interest and a touch of stark reality to an unusual story, beautifully rendered. Ages 6-9. (Publishers Weekly )

A few brave men
By A Customer
This book is a true story that vividly describes the era of baseball and the scoial climate of race relations in the early 1940's. The Brooklyn Dodgers were the first Major Leauge Baseball team to hire an African American. Branch Rickey of the Dodgers was looking for "a man strong enough not to fight back". Jackie Robinson was of course that man and it was known as the "Great Experiment". It was tough for Jackie who ws not well recieived by many whites, including his teammates. One teammate was different, he knew he should always do what is right even if everyone around him including family or friends felt differently, that man was Pewee Reese. This book looks at how racism affected many aspects of society and how the strength of one indidual can change many attitudes. There is a variety of mediums used for the illustrations that only enhance the book.

Brooklyn Dodger Teammates: Jackie Robinson & Pee Wee Reese
By Lawrance Bernabo
"Teammates" tells the story of one of the more moving moments in the history of baseball that occurred during the 1947 season when the Brooklyn Dodgers traveled to Crosley Field in Cincinnati to play the Reds. Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in the major leagues, was playing first base and being the target of hostility and abuse from the fans. At shortstop was Harold "Pee Wee" Reese, who born in the South, but who had refused to join other Southerners on the team in signing a petition to kick Jackie off the team. That day in Cincinnati, Reese did something that remains one of the bright moments of that historic season and which deserves to be more than a minor footnote in baseball history.

"Teammates" is written by Peter Golenbock, who heard the story of what happened that day from Rex Barney, who pitched for the Dodgers that day. Usually when the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the "color line" in baseball, the other key person in the story is Branch Rickey, the Dodger general manager. But Rickey could only support Robinson from the front office and not on the field, where it was Pee Wee Reese who decided to do something about that. Consequently, it is Reese who emerges as the hero of this particular story. Certainly it is safe to assume that anyone who reads this book knows something about Jackie Robinson; Golenbock talks about how Rickey needed somebody special to be the first, but does not get into the reasons why Robinson was that man (e.g., All-American football star at U.C.L.A., Army officer). But clearly "Teammates" is not intended to be the first book a youngster reads about the story of Jackie Robinson. Paul Bacon, as he did for the exquisite "Susanna of the Alamo," does both the design and illustration for this volume, combining historic photographs and items with his own watercolor paintings to tell the story.

classic
By A. Vernick
A simple telling of how Jackie Robinson came to play in the major leagues, this book portrays the prejudice he faced in a basic way that children can understand. And it shines a bright light on a quiet moment: PeeWee Reese's brave public declaration of solidarity with his teammate. This book has been my son's favorite for the past two years, since he was five.
