A Revival of One of the Best

My Catholic Faith was one of the treasures of my youth. The book belonged to my altar boy brothers, and so when I left home, and the Church was shrouded in modernism, I was sure I would not see that fine book again. I was pleased to see it in print once again, beautifully bound and illustrated. Because Bishop Morrow's book has not been "updated," the illustrations are a wonderful historical reference to the splendor of the Universal Church in all places.
I understood and appreciated this book at age ten. I understand and appreciate it still more as I near fifty.

Tremendous kid-commute catechism tool!

Timelessly orthodox Catholic faith, beautifully expressed. One can go into more detail by reading everything, or move faster through just the larger type in some sections. Good-sized illustrations are designed to distill abstract concepts into memorable impressions that can stick in a reader's mind.

For the past year, we've kept our copy in the back seat of the car. I ask my sons, who are 10 and 13, to read aloud from it several times a week during short regular commutes we make. I have never heard a groan! Amazing! We all freely interrupt the reading with comments and discussion.

Everybody's lives are so busy now it's hard to keep any kind of regular schedule of teaching our children their Catholic faith (as we vowed to do upon Catholic marriage). I highly recommend this way of sharing the Faith with preteens and older kids especially.

An Excellent Catechism of My Catholic Faith!

A beautiful catechism written by Bishop Louis Morrow in the 1950s. My Catholic Faith: A Catechism in Pictures was a very popular catechism in the 1950s until the 1960s. A special Jubilee Commerative edition was published in 1961, 1963, and 1965.

In the Philippines, My Catholic Faith is being published again by Catholic Trade, Inc. It is divided into 3 separate volumes and sold individually for P 36 Pesos which is about more than $0.50 in US Dollars! Sadly, the edition they reprinted was the 1965 edition under the pontificate of Pope Paul VI. It contains Modernist and other innovations such as calling Mass, "The Last Supper" or concelebration of the Liturgy by several priests. I know this because I own the 1965 edition of My Catholic Faith.

My Catholic Faith, was republished by Sarto House according to the 1954 edition prior to the Modernist revision of Pope Paul VI in 1965. It teaches the Catholic Faith very dogmatically and truthfully.

Here is an excellent example:

An anullment is when the Catholic Church declares a marriage to be null after thorough investigation and the evidence have proven that in the very beginning there had been no marriage thus it was not valid.

Nowadays, Catholics confuse anullments with divorce. Most Catholics believe they can get an anullment like getting candy from a baby. Ted Kennedy, a notorious liberal Catholic scandalizer had his 38 years of marriage "annulled" and is now married to a young woman about half his age.

I tell you this... This is an excellent catechism. It is even better than the Baltimore Catechism. It contains no Modernism or Americanism heresy teachings.

This catechism talks about everything---such as:

1. The [Tridentine] Latin Mass of the Roman Rite (prior to its simplication and revision in 1965 by Pope Paul VI and the reforms of the Second Vatican Council that preceeded the 1970 Novus Ordo Missae). It explains why Latin is used to celebrate Mass and why not the vernacular.

2. The role and organization of the Holy Office and Roman Curia* (prior to its reorganization in 1967 by Cardinal Jean Villot, the Vatican Secretary of State with the approval of Paul VI).

3. The Initiating Rank of the Priesthood---the ranks of the Minor Orders and Major Orders (prior to the abolition of the Minor Orders and radical reform of the priesthood by Pope Paul VI).

3. The Dogma of No Salvation Outside the Church.

4. Distinction between Venial Sin and Mortal Sin as well as Sacrilege.

5. The definitions of Heresy and Schism including the invalidity of the the Anglican or Episocopalian holy orders for bishops and priests according to the 1547 Edwardine Ordinal.

6. Differences between the Eastern (Uniate) Catholic Church and the heretical schismatic Eastern Orthodox churches.

7. The liturgical setting, background, and consecration of a Catholic altar according to the Roman Rite prior to the New Rite used in 1969 under Paul VI.

Diane, doing what she does best, writing wonderful stories. Lovely Anthology.

Do you remember those moments from your childhood when the excitement of an event was all you could think about ? Even better, when the event finally came, and lived upto your expectations and stayed with you forever ? It was like this for me with this book. I just adored it. I first got to hear Diane was working on this last year through a Facebook group that I belong to (you can click on it here) So what else could I do but advance order it and eagerly await for it to appear in my download queue ?

After her success with "How still my love", this book see's Diane return to writing not just one, but a collection of 5 shorter stories, released as one volume. One of these, Imperial hotel, has been released previously, but to be honest, I didn't mind this as it's by some way my favourite short story. As an added bonus, you also get an excerpt of "How still my love" to enjoy at the end. Really nice addition. Even if you're not a fan, this latest book is well worth checking out. Diane has a really versatile writing style, which is showcased in beautiful scenes featuring a wonderful wicked sense of humour. She writes the kind of books I would love to be able to write myself.

Let me tell you a little about her latest release, while trying not give too much away.....

Italian Summer tells the story of Jessica, a young woman who escapes to Italy to recover from a break-up with Keira. Staying at the wonderfully named "Appartamenti della Cinque Lune" she explores the local tourist sights, before meeting Antonella, a local tour guide who lives in the apartment next door. This is a story about how "the one" can utterly change your life, making you alive to the possibilities of taking chances and living in the moment. It's beautifully framed by Diane's signature ability to create a scene and rich, intriguing characters, leaving you the chance to create your own sequel and backstories. (For me one of the best things about a short story) As anyone who knows me would tell you, its my favourite of the set, right in my comfort zone and preferred genre, I would definitely fly to meet Antonella - yummy !!!

Sweet girl. This story, written for some friends of the author, (who share a fondness for all things confectionary) see's Mandy, a local confectioner, fall for Skylar, a woman, who I'm not afraid to admit, wears mascara the way I want to !!! There's more to Skylar than meets the eye though and soon Mandy wonders if "sugar and spice, really is all that's nice", or whether, in the books penultimate scene whether Skylars betrayal was just "sugar loving". This was an intriguing story for me, whose twist, when it was revealed took the story in a direction I wasn't expecting. I like that. It was a nice touch, which again, drew me to the characters and the possibility of their follow on story, but in a different way to the first. I also found myself wondering whether it was a insight into the authors friends, particularly when I read "If you want to woo me, buy me a book for valentines day" Something only an author would say, particularly when there's the possibility of chocolate !!!

It's only love. As you would expect from the story which the book is named after, this is a little longer than the pre-ceeding ones. It's also a departure from what you might expect from, but her trademark writing skills are all on display here. We join Cameron, our lead, questioning her sexuality after a bad encounter with Evan, who even in the brief time we know him comes across as a complete sleaze. In an attempt to forget him and acting on a conversation she heard on the train, Cameron goes to a local fetish club and horror of horrors, meets two of her friends !!! Breezing past the potentially awkward encounter, Grayson leads her into an antechamber with Corbin ( a girl she has been friends with for a long time, even lusting after) Although initially a threesome, the encounter quickly becomes about Cameron and Corbin as Diane treats us to some really expressive, descriptive and powerfully erotic writing. It's clear from her words that she has really enjoyed this story and understood the premise of this type of relationship, born out of friendship, that turns into exclusivity. Like the others before, it gives you enough detail to be complete on its own, while inviting you to experiment with the characters after you finish, but in a very different genre. Personally, I really enjoyed this one and can see why Diane has named the book after it. I loved the names of two of the protagonists and the concept of the story - Cameron and Corbin. If you're from the UK, this alone makes the whole book worth buying and reading !!! It's just typically Diane, different, edgy, thoroughly enjoyable and one I'm sure her fans will love and why not ?

Blue lamp. Continuing on with the edgy theme, this paranormal story sees Miranda and Chelsea move to Mirandas fathers house at his request after two couples unexpectedly move out at short notice for no apparent reason. For me, this was the most different of all the four stories and one that I hadn't expected to enjoy as much I did. I'm more of a girly romance fan than a paranormal one, but its a well written story with a lot to enjoy in it as well as its very own "Eeeeeek" moment at the end !!! . Told separately Miranda's and Chelsea's viewpoints, I'm told that it really captures the essence of how possession and channelling feel from a spiritually open and sensitive persons viewpoint (Chelsea) counterplaying it with the more questioning and sceptical one from Miranda. It's positively good fun and a really strong addition to the set. I hope she writes more in this style.

Imperial hotel is a beautiful love story which tells of the relationship between Joan and Lily in a time when the social attitudes and expectations of women were very different. The book divides neatly into three parts, their introduction, courtship and latter day reflection, with the story highlighting each woman’s thoughts about the relationship during each part. Joan’s introduction to Lily at the hotel is typical of many around the world at a time of arranged marriages. Her mother is introducing her to the socialite scene and looking for lily to “mentor” her in order to find an appropriate suitor. From this introduction, Joan’s feelings for Lily develop as they spend more time together making arrangements for both Lilys wedding, Joan’s courtship and volunteer work at a nearby homeless shelter. Joan and Lilys characters each have a different appeals and vulnerabilities which depending on your own perspective, you’ll find hard not to sympathise with at least one, or both off. I personally aligned with Lily, not just because of her rebellious nature that is full of hope, but also what she stands to lose in terms of how her life develops. For me, that made her the villain of the story, who also comes complete with her own “pretty woman” moment, which I would defy you not to smile at ! Joan’s character (for me the heroine) is more confident of her feelings after their initial introduction, but which aren’t enough for Lily to buck the social convention and path laid out for her. Reeling from this rejection, Joan throws herself back at rebuilding her life and her university studies, with Lily seeking her out again, shortly after the birth of her child.

Five very different stories, from a very talented writer. One of the really nice things about an anthology for both the writer and the reader, the author gets to take a chance and try something different, without potentially ruining a whole book for her readers and the reader gets to experience a different style with someone that they know and trust. Overall for me - completely worth a 5 star review. You're sure to find something to suit your preference here and if you do, why not pop her a note to let her know which one you would like a sequel to ? You never know - you could end up with your own version of "sweet girl" !!!

I really enjoyed the variety, sweetness and sexiness of each story. Diane takes you to each location through her descriptions of cities, towns and of course the characters.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR LINDA KING was raised in the wild back country of Boulder, Utah, which in now in the heart of STAIRCASE ESCALANTE NATONAL MONUMENT. It was one of the last towns in America to receive a road, built by the CCC boys and the last place mail was delivered by horseback. She has been a sculptor for over 50 years doing many portraits of writers and poets, including Charles Bukowski, Lawrence Farlinghetti, A.D.Winans, Jack Micheline, Harold Norse, Geraldine King and Jack Hirshman among others. Linda is a much published poet in her own right, published in many small press magazines, such as Wormwood Review, Half n’ Half, New York Quarterly, Pearl, Vagabond, Shameless Hussy, Purr, Rattle and many, many more. Her play was selected with ten other writers for COLLORATAL DAMAGE at Metro Arts in Phoenix, Az. She was part of Playwrights Workshop Theatre, taught by Raymond Shurtz for many years. Linda, now lives in San Francisco, close to her daughter and grandkids and continues to write, paint and sculpture. Hers older son lives in Chandler, AZ. Her youngest son lives in L.A. is a movie maker.

Another Take on Bukowski

While I agree about this book needing a strong edit, I think it's a better read than previous reviewers give it credit for. I can understand their chagrin as it's almost a stream-of-conscious narrative layered with page after page of Linda's poetry that pales in comparison to the smattering of typically terrific poems written by Bukowski to her or about her family.

She does offer stories and quotes from Bukowski that I found interesting and every so often some new fact or comment appears that make the read worthwhile. The last third of the book repeats itself or lapses into King's daily business and should have been cut. For some reason, King has an absurdly large number of chapters that can't be scrolled through on the Kindle.

Even if you've read everything there is about and written by Buk, don't skip this one. There are gems here waiting to be discovered.

A big improvement

Perhaps responding to some of the negative feedback the first edition received, this book has been released by a new publisher as a second edition with a new cover and vastly improved editing. I liked the first story in the series very much, and this one is as good, but in a different way. Julia has settled down with Keverin and is learning what it is to be a noble lady betrothed to a Lord Protector, when King Pergann finally dies leaving Deva's throne empty. With no heir to follow him, there is a mad scramble among the lords to take the throne.
Worth a read, but read the first one before you get this. There are a lot of references to what happens in book one.

Lighthearted, but light and inconsistent

I bought this book because of an earlier review that complained about no explanation of the formulae. I was hoping that what that really meant is that it was filled with good math and was in depth. Unfortunately, it isn't.

There are some of the chapters that I found very interesting, such as the chapter on attraction cycles. There are other chapters that were really just fluff. Some quick references to some research, and some silly insinuations about the author's bar hopping experiences or lack thereof.

I liked that the book took a number of concepts and translated them to references to mathematics papers.

I disliked that there was not enough math. Formulas are presented without defining any of the terms. So you might be told that an attraction cycle is represented by f(x)= R(x) + a*B(x). But there is no definition of the R function, how the a constant is derived, or the B function. Nor is there a discussion, usually, of the research that went on to define the function and alternatives examined. The book would benefit very much from going into a full definition of the functions, even if it were in an appendix. Instead, you get a little bit of a tease but not enough information to understand.

Likewise, there are cases where the mathematical focus would benefit from a discussion of computer science or engineering techniques. For example, the author describes the complexity of how a dating service might perform similarity matches. She readily admits that she doesn't know what they actually do, so conjectures, makes some references to multidimensional analysis, and more or less leaves it at that. Such a chapter would benefit from a discussion of Bayesian networks, cluster analysis, or other techniques that are common in the computer world as ways to deal with the particular issue.

Although I have not yet finished reading the book, I find that I am starting to skim, which is never a great sign. I'm getting the feeling that the author dug into a few of the topics, but then added a number of chapters to flesh out the table of contents. I will finish the book, but I'm finding that I'm much more interested in the next book on my list. (The Machine That Changed The World)

Some Quick Math for Potential Buyers

Here is some math for customers considering this book. There are 7 reviews preceeding mine. 5 are right. 2 are wrong.

The reviews that are right have noticed that the book contains no math. The reviews that are wrong have noticed that the book is vaguely about sex. Actually it's not. It's about the difficulty difficulty some academics have in starting a sentence and completing it on the same topic.

The trouble with invoking applied mathematics is that you have to support what you're saying. Therefore when offering an equation or formula you traditionally state what the variables stand for.

I assume that the author has this information but finds it difficult to restate in common English. Almost every topic is concluded in this drift: "Well it would be much too time consuming to explain what this formula means but isn't it nice to know that it exists?"

No. I mean it would be, but we don't know that the formula does exist (hapless readers that we are). To convince us, you have to explain it. Explain: which means state clearly and describe how it works.

Here's an example, misanthropically quoted by MSN this morning.

If you are looking for a mate for life the correct formula is to

go out with 12 people and then choose the next best one after that, which seems to mean better than number 11 but not necessarily as good as number 12. Yes, just ducky, but why is that true?: Sorry, explanation time is over. Exam will be at the sports bar on Saturday night. Don't blow it.

Now look: does this "formula" stand up on its own two feet or is it also drunk and falling off its barstool? Does it still count if all 12 of them dumped YOU? Suppose they were all alcoholics, or verbally abusive? Suppose your relationship with each lasted only three days? Suppose, less dramatically, that following the normal psychological model, you simply picked the same "type" every time? Do you actually have enough information to proceed or should you still see a lawyer about pre-nups. And why 12? Why not 30 or the square root of 17?

Perhaps the author was afraid that if she actually explained herself clearly her readers would spend so much time working out the fractals between margaritas that they'd never go home with anyone. She should ease her mind and write the book correctly. No one is going to take her conclusions to the field. The subject is interesting as theory. And it is interesting. I just wish the author had taken advantage of the fact.

On the whole an informative book

Yes, I agree with the previous reviewers that this book is an informative light hearted romp through the world of mathematical

modelling of one of biology's most important topics: sex. But, I am giving this book only 3 stars since I find it very irritating to be fed with mathematical equations where no attempt has ever been made to explain the various variables or even a rudimentary explanation. This is just plain show and very very detracting!

A comprehensive guide to practitioner

This book is an invaluable reference to all those in the internal auditing field, especially for all those who are now managing an internal audit function. The internal audit has been evloving constantly over the past 20 years to become more and more suitable for the modern business, with increasing focus on business strategy, consultation, control system designs and implementaion etc. This book is a very timely addition to the profession, given the increasing awareness of the need for internal control as required by the new legislation (i.e. Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002). A wealth of information is packed inside with lots of flowcharts and graphical presentations, which make the readers all the way easy to understand and able to grasp the author's core concepts. There are many useful suggestions as well. Practicability has always been a subject of debate for an internal audit function and this book is no less to clear the myths about it. The relationship between internal and external auditors is also covered in depth. I am particularly interested in two of the chapters on behavioural aspects and marketing of auditing services. They show how the author assimilated his experiences with theory. The content on auditing over information technology including techniques and relationship with business operations demonstrated the book's comprehensiveness as ever as it could be. The subject is a niche and nobody wants to be checked and balanced. But you'd find advices on how to reconciliate the differences between the businesses and controls. This makes even more valuable to all those managers who are at the operational frontline realize how important to carry out their daily supervisions with sufficient controls. Overall, a highly recommended item.

Awesome story and so sexy

Who likes their romance and erotica with two super willing participants from the get go? I know I don't. It's always much better when there is some serious tension going on and someone is being pursued or has some baggage holding them back. Author Zoe Belle apparently understands this and depicts these elements well in Part 1 of "The Billionaire's Step". Julian is a self-made billionaire who still pines after the one that got away. Surprise, she (Cora) ends up in his office but has changed into a very strong-willed beauty. The attraction is definitely there and the encounters are super hot. Part 2 can't come soon enough for me.

Decent length for serial novella. Surprisingly good character development and a an actual story line. I read so many of these erotic based romances that they start to all be alike. Thus one stood out and was worth reviewing. Looking forward to reading part two of this story.
