About the Author
Fredrica Edward grew up in country Australia speaking cant terms straight from the Regency period, which are now disappearing from use due to the globalization of English via television and movies. Her husband teases her on how easily she can still drop into the vernacular if she meets an old timer, but as he once used the word "gammon" in polite conversation - a term only used by highwaymen in Georgette Heyer novels; she pays him no heed. Fredrica spent her summer holidays with her great aunt, a modern miss who learnt to drive a car, and conveyed her husband to the pub once a week when he became too old to get on a horse. Fred first read Pride and Prejudice at fifteen and thought it very entertaining. She next read it at thirty and thought it a work of genius.

I'm glad I did - I was not disappointed

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I was skeptical because the cover art screams "bad fan fiction." However, I decided to give it a chance because the premise was appealing. I'm glad I did - I was not disappointed. It is well-written and engaged my attention for the entirety, which is rare for variations of this length.

PROS:
There is a great deal of humor in this book. These humorous scenes really added to my enjoyment of the work as it made all the minor characters more endearing (rather than annoying as I usually find them). The humor is very tasteful and witty - not the ridiculous variety that makes you roll your eyes and put the book down in disgust.

I love that Elizabeth is independent and resourceful, looking to useful employment, as opposed to marriage, for contentment. Now, before you object to the unrealistic idea of a gentleman's daughter finding employment, it is addressed in the book to satisfaction. Lizzy's "occupation" was one of my favorite elements of this book. This idea touches upon a women's loss of freedom and independence upon marriage.

I usually shy away from stories that center on Darcy wanting Elizabeth to be his mistress. It is distasteful and makes him irreversibly undesirable in my book. I was curious about how the author would "make it right" in the end. It seems impossible for Darcy to redeem himself after making such a disgusting proposition. However, this author did a fairly good job of it. This also allowed for an interesting segue into the topic of the double standard between genders regarding sex.

CONS
Most of the book is a re-telling of the Jane Austen original with small tweaks. Obviously, I love the original but am looking for new twists when I read variations. It made for a bit of a boring read in the middle. I don't know how JAFF authors can really get around this issue though...

Elizabeth's change of heart to accept Darcy came much too abruptly. She was pretty much disgusted, insulted, and dead-set against him right up until she up and accepted his second proposal. This is strange considering how well-evolved the remainder of the story is.

I like epilogues. The author explains at the end why she excluded it from her book and that it can be found online; however, I really wish she would have just included it. She made mention of possibly writing a continuation and I hope she does. I would definitely read it! Also, the author should consider new cover art. It does not at all reflect the quality you find inside.

Unique and Imaginative

Loved this one! It was long and well written, very few typos. I've been a review slacker lately, just giving stars at the end of the Kindle version if it was a 3 or 4 stars in my opinion. Had to review this one! The author really used her imagination and mixed things up, really unique plot turns. There were sex scene's but not overly so, I enjoyed them. The author did not follow J.A. cannon, but that is one of the reasons I loved it. This was a real gold mine in this genre to me, quite out of the ordinary. I hope the author does a follow up, she seems to have barely scratched the surface here and has left lots of story room to follow.
Highly recommend for Austen fanfic lovers

Interesting new take on some of our favorite characters

Very enjoyable and unique read overall. Have yet to read a P and P variation quite like it. The Darcy and Elizabeth characters are somewhat different from their original selves, but in some very interesting ways. Lizzy is strong as ever, but she is more serious in this book, with less interest in parties, poetry or marriage. Darcy appears to be written a bit younger with something of a teenager's labido. We get to see sides of Darcy that would not have been discussed in the original. If you prefer to believe Darcy was saving himself for marriage, this is not the book for you. There were some editing problems, but I did not find them too distracting. Other than Darcy coming off as quite the rake at times, the book is very entertaining, and some of the main characters evolve in unexpected ways. It does alter from the original storyline quite a bit. No elopement for one.

John W. Mullins John Mullins is Associate Professor of Management Practice at London Business School, where he heads the entrepreneurship group. He earned his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and, considerably later in life, his PhD in marketing from the University of Minnesota. An award-winning teacher, John brings to his teaching and research 20 years of executive experience in high-growth firms, including two ventures he founded, one of which he took public. Since becoming a business school professor in 1992, John has published more than 30 articles in a variety of outlets, including Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, and the Journal of Business Venturing. His research has won national and international awards from the Marketing Science Institute, the American Marketing Association, and the Richard D. Irwin Foundation. He is also co-author of Marketing Management: A Strategic Decision-Making Approach, 5th edition. Orville C. Walker, Jr. Orville C. Walker, Jr. is Professor Emeritus in the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, where he served until recently as the James D. The book is ok, but it is not compatible with windows 8 kinddle reader nor with cloud reader... so i can just read it on the small screen of my telephone or will have to buy another device... big dissapointment, should give complete information to customers on the limitations. The book is not cheap.

A few of them are hiding in Ivy League schools’ prison education programs—they don’t want to be known—but most of them are recruited by the one billion dollar industry reentry employee programs that allow the US to profit from their life and labor. Whereas, African Americans consist of only 12% of the population in the US, black males are incarcerated at much higher rates. The chances of these formerly convicted men to succeed after prison—to matriculate as leading members of society—are increasingly slim. The doors are closed to them.

Invisible Men is a book that will crack the code on the stigma of incarceration. When Flores Forbes was released from prison, he made a plan to re-invent himself but found it impossible. His involvement in a plan to kill a witness who was testifying against Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party, had led to his incarceration. While in prison he earned a college degree using a Pell Grant, with hope this would get him on the right track and a chance at a normal life. He was released but that’s where his story and most invisible men’s stories begin.

The truth about so called legal incarceration in the United States

With a forcefulness rarely seen in books that deal with the american prison/industrial complex and using examples from his own life experience Flores Forbes eviscerates one of our most basic (and for some cherished) assumptions: that slavery in America ended with the Civil War.

He painstakingly lays out the evidence that the practice persists today in our country masked as legal incarceration and enshrined in the exception clause of the 13th amendment..

Forbes describes how men and women (many of them convicted of minor crimes) are forced into industrial servitude, bound by chains, faced with subhuman living conditions and subjected to physical torture if they refuse to comply.

He then documents the effect that being "formerly incarcerated" has had on not just him but also on those who seek to regain full citizenship free from the stain of imprisonment.

The book implores those of us who are aware of this immoral practice to not sit idly by while it takes place but to get involved in efforts to amend the 13th amendments exception clause so that once a person has paid their debt to society a path to full restoration of their rights as citizens should await them when they are released.

I found Invisible Men :A Contemporary Slave Narrative in the era of Mass Incarceration to be one of the most compelling books 'Ive ever read and I would encourage those who recognize slavery as a crime of moral turpitude and who also care about the plight of those who are imprisoned to read it as well.

The author with honesty and clarity describes his prison experiences and the difficult and long path that he took to educate himself and integrate himself into society to become a valued employee. Along the way he learned through books and caring mentors the steep steps that former incarcerated people have to climb.

A book to get if you need a good understanding of neurochem

This book is ideal for both undergrad and grad students in the fields of neuroscience, pharmacology, and psychology. The information is arranged neatly with the authors introducing concepts at the cellular level (anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry), then moving on to intercellular signaling. From here, the neurochemical factors are introduced, outlining their functional significance at the molecular level. The last few chapters of this book expands on the role of several neurochemical interactions in the context of diseases like Alzheimer's and Creutzfeld-Jakob (Mad cow-like disorder), Huntington's (and other related basal ganglia disorders), and several Psychiatric disorders (anxiety, mood disorders, addiction, etc). The figures are excellent, and succintly explained. Several color plates are also included. Note that the book I bought has textual addenda/errata located at the back, in order to correct factual/typographical errors. Nevertheless, these corrections don't affect the whole integrity of the contents, but rather they strengthened it.

This book also includes a CD-ROM which constitutes the book's contents, and provides nice figures that you can use as a reference. Overall, I recommend this book if you think you will embark on a career in the medical sciences, or if you are an undergrad that would like to go to grad schools.

Alcohol and the chemistry of human memory

Some fresh angles on the memory problem can be pieced together from distinct bits and pieces included in this book on the brain's catabolic habits, on starvation and diabetes, and on the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the chemistry of the brain.
Alcoholism offers us clues to how the memory works and fails. In both chronic and acute alcoholism, it appears the pen of memory stops writing quite suddenly. In the extreme chronic condition, an alcoholic who has progressed to Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome can be trapped forever in a particular day - the day the pen of memory lifted.
For a few fortunate alcoholics the brain's working memory can be restored with early injections of Vitamin B1, which is thiamine. Thiamine is a very common co-factor. It operates in a great many different biochemical pathways. But look: One among those many pathways is quite possibly the biochemical pathway that is essential for -- and could thus lead us straight to -- the human memory machine. The grand prize. This helpful hint has never been followed up exhaustively, although there are lots of takes on what might be going on.
This book holds a second hint. Perhaps the same crucial biochemical pathway to memory can be interrupted at a different point, in a different way -temporarily -- in the brain of a drinker experiencing an acute alcoholic memory blackout. See pages 659-660 for a summary discussion of ethanol, glucose and ketone body catabolism in the brain.
Notice sometime, in the spirit of science, the horrible, noxious, acetone like odor on the breath of a heavy drinker. It is very evident on the morning after. Ketone bodies are still so plentiful in the blood that an observer can smell them, and the brain (perhaps thinking the body is starving) may have shifted gears to protect itself. Instead of glucose, which the brain almost invariably prefers to eat, the brain can in a starvation emergency burn ketone bodies instead. Whenever they turn up, as for example on the occasion of a drinking binge, the brain will sense an emergency and make the changeover from glucose passively and automatically. So perhaps this emergency shift away from glucose is another pointer to the biochemical pathway that leads to human memory.
Maybe sugar synthesis, via the phosphogluconate shunt, is an important part of the memory pathway. It we are talking about ribose synthesis, which is certainly one possibility, this would imply an interruption or a shift, within the programmable phosphogluconate shunt, to the production of sugars other than ribose. Downstream, the pinch on ribose production would also constrain the synthesis of nucleotides and nucleic acids. It is an in interesting possibility because some people are examining anew the long despised notion that nucleic acids might constitute a human memory store. Another possible memory storage medium is a sprigged together sugar or glycoprotein molecule, perhaps assembled in the manner of a ganglioside.
There are lots of other avenues of action for ethanol upon memory. For examples, Ethanol is directly toxic to the nerves of the hippocampus, it affects LTP there and it also bombs the daylights out of the liver, suggesting that alcoholic memory loss is not a biochemistry problem to be pursued in the brain alone. If you are interested in the memory problem, Basic Neurochemistry is a major resource and great hunting ground for fresh ideas.
As with any other text in neuroscience, you should first read Spikes (Rieke et al. 1996) as an essential preface. It will help you parse out which assumptions in this science can still be believed, post 1993, and which assumptions should now be sharply questioned or instantly discarded.

Presented in an A to Z format, this greatly expanded new edition spans fifty years of game design--from the very earliest (1962's Spacewar) through the present day releases on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC.

Each game entry includes the year of release, the hardware it was released on, the name of the developer/publisher, a one to five star quality rating, and a descriptive review which offers fascinating nuggets of trivia, historical notes, cross-referencing with other titles, information on each game's sequels and of course the author's views and insights into the game.

In addition to the main entries and reviews, a full-color gallery provides a visual timeline of gaming through the decades, and several appendices help to place nearly 3,000 games in context. Appendices include: a chronology of gaming software and hardware, a list of game designers showing their main titles, results of annual video game awards, notes on sourcing video games, and a glossary of gaming terms.

Video game expert Matt Fox lives in the medieval city of Canterbury in the United Kingdom. He is regional coordinator for a charity that runs engineering projects within schools and is also heavily involved with the teaching and promotion of space science in the UK.

The best gaming reference book on the market!

The Video Games Guide is an impressive reference title that seems set on being 'all of gaming' in one book. In short, its a fun and entertaining read that will keep you reading for weeks or more like months.

Games, hardware, designers, graphics, awards - there is a lot of content for your dollars here. I haven't read the whole thing yet because the main core of the guide is reviews presented from a to z. You dip in to it and read a review and then sometimes that will cross reference to another game or you'll spot another title on that page which you recognize and that will lead you off on another tangent.

It's a fantastic resource which has to include thousands of titles and so far its included every single game that i've tried to look up. The reviews themselves vary from being quite short and brutal (Fox really doesnt sugercoat games which suck) to lengthy essay style pieces of the many classics from gaming history. I got into gaming in the late 80s early 90s and there are so many great games from that era (Dungeon Master, Outrun, Golden Axe, Strider, Monkey Island, Doom, it goes on and on) that reading The Video Games Guide becomes a trip down memory lane and the passion of Fox is totally infectious. I enjoy reading the reviews of games i've already played perhaps even more then the ones I haven't because I am interested to hear the writers thoughts on them. The reviews go from 1962 to 2012 so there are 50 years of game reviews in there.

As well as reviews there are screenshots in the middle of the book. These also go from 1962 to 2012 and are a really great way to admire how graphics have changed over the years. At the back of the book are 5 appendices and a glossary. I think the best appendix is the one about hardware because it includes essays on all the important consoles and computers from history and these are really interesting reads.

The Video Games Guide is definitely the biggest and best reference book for gaming and I can see myself coming back to it again and again over the years, happy to recommend it to others!

Best one-volume videogame reference work available

I think this is one of my favorite books I've received for review. I end up with a lot of stinkers, but this book is pure joy for me. For a videogame nerd, this is an outstanding reference work. I can easily open it up to a random page and lose myself in memories by reading the brief description of one of my favorite games. I find lots of reviews by Fox that I disagree with, but that is all part of the fun. Unlike a fan-contributed sites like MobyGames, which is probably more comprehensive, every review here is the work of one mind, with a particular and interesting point of view. You just don't get as much out of a collection of disparate reviews. Even if there is some kind of wiki-style crowd-editing process, it cannot produce a work as interesting as this one.

The book is primarily composed of short reviews of videogames. The middle of the book contains color images of the best and most popular games. There are several appendices listing other interesting information: a chronology of videogames including many not reviewed in this volume, a capsule history of consoles, a listing of prominent videogame designers, and a glossary. This is the best one-volume videogame reference work I have ever seen. It is also the only one-volume videogame reference work I have ever seen. Don't let that deter you, this is a fine work.

The most complete and comprehensive history of consoles that I know of is Phoenix: The Fall & Rise of Videogames by Leonard Herman. This work focuses on the games themselves. The sheer quantity of games the author has played staggers my mind. I thought I played a lot! What really impresses is the overall quality of the work. Sure, you can find a mistake here and there, but there are hundreds of reviews, and I appreciate the yeoman's work done here to collate all this information into one handy volume. I know I'll be leafing through this often.

Are you a gamer? I guarantee you'll find something new here

Now here's a guy who understands video games; someone who gets it. I don't agree with every review of Fox's, but it's evident that he's done his homework. And you'll certainly discover that he left out some childhood favorite of yours, but trust me, for every beloved title not included, there are three more you've never heard of and should look up.

A superior gaming experience is more than just flashy graphics or intuitive gameplay or a compelling story. It's about immersion. All great video games, like great works of art, succeed at drawing you into a unique other-world where the experience is so compelling that you stick around to find out what happens next.

Thanks to The Video Games guide I now have a list of classics that I intend to go back and play myself someday.
